Z39.50 – An extensive and powerful protocol, providing complex distributed searching abilities, and retrieval of structured data from databases hosted on any platform.

XML – Extensible Markup Language. A new and powerful internet technology. Part of a suite of technologies used for the management, display and exchange of data. – Allows unprecedented flexibility in data management and transmission – platform independent. JAVA + XML = portable CODE, portable DATA

Demonstration: Building web sites for general searches – Of particular interest to website developers. Building Library information portals – Attractive to Librarians who wish to deal with content rather than web pages. Tools for writing web pages with Z39.50 content. For example, reading lists.
