Introduction... Fig 5 Article Name: “The Greening of Google” Source: IEEE Spectrum Magazine Overview: This article is an insight into the world of corporate solar. It discusses the international polysilicon current day sustainable development issues. solar market and how it may benefit/improve our The article describes the North American Googleplex buildings and the 9212 solar panels that occupy its rooftops. It also provides further details stating what the panels generate and future projections. I will discuss these figures and statistics included in the article whilst relating them to standard living. This is to help you get a better understanding of the key points, I have extracted from the article, included throughout my presentation. Author: Sandra Upson Published: Oct 2007

Sustainable Development? Sustainable development is basically any method or idea designed to reduce the impact of modern day living whilst also improving the health and wealth of our society for future generations. Sustainable technologies on the other hand consist of a design that is created specifically to reduce its impact on society, by using less or creating more renewable energy resources, to better our environment. 5 The plex... To help you understand the key points taken from the article. Here are some facts I feel are fundamental to your understanding. 9000 kilowatt-hours of energy, generated by the 8 Googleplex buildings in 1 day, could power: 1 standard 50w light bulb for 2 years and 20 days. Or... 18,000 50w light bulbs for 1 hour. 1 mega watt, MW, is equal to 1 million watts. Watt-hours are how many watts can be powered over a period of time.

Corporate Competition... There are several countries/companies competing, on an international level, to build the largest corporate solar installation site in the world. Although the Googleplex has been branded “the largest solar installation in North America” statistics show that it isn’t even in the worldwide top 10. This is due to a 100% increase in the Spanish market and other countries, i.e. Germany, having dramatically larger installations than the rest of the world. Germany alone almost accounts for 50% of all installed capacities worldwide! Circled in red are the relevant countries and their statistics from the “Greening of Google” article taken from the IEEE Spectrum Magazine. Fig 9

Solar Markets... The US commercial sector accounted for 60% of newly installed capacity in 2006. That's a 46.5% increase from the previous 13.5% taken in 2001. That is a growth of nearly 10% a year. It is also expected to rise by 40% per year. Despite not being in the worldwide top 10. The Googleplex installation has been branded “The second-fastest-growing solar market in the world” Fig 10

Wal-Mart vs. Tesco... The world's largest retailer, intends to outshine all other companies with multipart plans to put more than 5.6 MW's worth of solar panels on the roofs of 22 stores in California and Hawaii. Tesco, the British-based supermarket chain, says it intends to put up a 2-MW solar installation at an office complex in Northern California. Wal-MartTesco Installing 1479 polysilicon solar panels per store. Installing 11,627 polysilicon solar panels per store. Fig 11 Fig 12 Fig 13

Summary ”It's not an illusion,” says Craig Cornelius, program manager for the Department of Energy's solar division. ”Corporate solar is really happening.”
