3. New England The New England colonies were founded by the Puritans. They were still VERY religious and based their entire lives around the church. Church was the center of town

4. New England Education and Kids Children were taught to read, just so they could read the Bible. Kids would play fun games like pushing a hoop with a stick

5. New England Land and weather were not great for farming. Most of the farming was subsistence farming rather than cash farming. Deep water seaports made these colonies perfect for trading.

7. Middle Colonies New York Pennsylvania New Jersey Delaware

8. Middle Colonies The Middle colonies had good farmland and decent seaports. This meant that they were able to balance agriculture and trade.

9. Middle Colonies These colonies had some of the largest populations due to their large size and resources.

10. Religion in the Middle Colonies More religious freedom than other regions Pennsylvania was settled by Quakers, but allowed for religious freedom, so Catholics and Jews soon followed. Religious freedoms found here laid the foundations for our 1 st Amendment.

11. Education and Work in the Middle Colonies There were no public schools in the Middle Colonies. Most children were taught in church or in private schools. Many children quit school at the age of 12 in order to learn a trade like shoemaking, horse training, or farming. These kids would be called apprentices and would work without pay for several years, until they learned the trade.

13. Southern Colonies Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia

14. Southern Colonies Farm, Farm, Farm!!! They grew lots of tobacco, rice, and indigo. The colonists needed help, and much of it came in the form of slaves and indentured servants.

15. Southern Colonies The colonies in the South were very large and sparsely populated. They faced constant attack from the Spanish in Florida. Often disagreed with what the people in New England were doing.

16. Religion in the Southern Colonies Most people in the southern colonies were Baptists Although church was important for Southern colonists, it was more of a once a week thing than everyday like in New England.

17. Agriculture in the Southern Colonies Rice and Indigo were huge cash crops in South Carolina and Georgia. SC was the world’s leading exporter of rice at one point. Tobacco and corn were found to the north in NC, Virginia, and Maryland. Here, there climate and soil were very similar to Indiana.
