18 ACTIVITY: Create Your Own Hieroglyph Message In your assigned groups, create a 2 sentence message using Egyptian hieroglyphs. DO NOT COPY SENTENCES FROM THE QUIZ. Write your message on a piece of butcher paper. Use the same symbols that would have been used by the ancient Egyptians. You should use a combination of the symbols for the words and then words entirely spelt out with hieroglyphs. On the back of the poster, students should record what the message actually says.

19 ACTIVITY: Create Your Own Hieroglyph Message When you are finished, let me know and I will post your message somewhere in the classroom. When every group is finished with their message, we’ll begin a hieroglyphic gallery walk. You will go around and try to translate the other messages posted around the room.

20 Group Assignments: A: Erin, Sam, Jackson J. B: Nathan, Rebecca, Jenna C: Veer, Preston, Drew D: Sofya, Srinidhi, Kirk E: Trisha, Sydney, Chris F:, Jade, Hita, Levi G: Brenden, Kevin, Lithin H: Tyra, Kelly, Alex, Jackson S.

21 Free-Response: Must be in complete sentences! 1. Discuss the historical significance of hieroglyphs as a form of communication and how you think this form of communication helped the ancient Egyptian Empire to become a superpower. 2. In today’s technologically advanced world, the use of hieroglyphs or images to record history and send messages from place to place seems ineffective and cumbersome. But, we have seen a return to the use of symbols/images to communicate (think emojis, abbreviations of text), at least in informal settings. Why do you think we have begun to use images/symbols again as a form of communication?
