AST 17 March 2016 Deployment Opportunities Deployment Opportunities Update for AST 17 JCOMMOPS

AST 17 March 2016 Information gathered by JCOMMOPS Research Ships -IRSO -UNOLS -GO-SHIP -… Commercial Ships -Hamburg Süd -CMA-CGM -SOT -… Sailing Ships -Racing (BWR, Volvo) -Leisure (Cornell, VSF) -Old Style (Bark Europa) -… Chartered Ships Cost-effective, integrated JCOMM operations, set-up through operator ProLarge

AST 17 March 2016 Cruise Registration at JCOMMOPS -Automated downloading and processing of information from key sources such as UNOLS. -Manual registration of information (and updates) from many other sources – such as YOU. -Linked to a ship list with unique ICES identifiers. -Not all information can be made public due to security regulations. -Systems depends on active sharing of information from community members.

AST 17 March 2016 JCOMMOPS Cruise Registration

AST 17 March 2016 New JCOMMOPS System: Query and show Platforms and Cruises simoultaniously

AST 17 March 2016 Next Step: Sat AIS Synchronization - Identify more Ships on repeat Cruises in target Areas

AST 17 March 2016 Intersessional Period: Examples Top-level agreement with CMA-CGM: -Target zone: Off Somalia (requested by GDP) -Long-term operation in need of coordination between shipping company, ship owner, ship officer, instrument operator and PMO office -Established under the JCOMM-OPA umbrella, and successfully implemented with PMO office in Mombasa/Kenya -Monthly opportunity, now also including Argo floats

AST 17 March 2016 Sailing : Races, Rallies and Tall Ships IOC-IMOCA partnership signed during COP-21, targeting self-funded and recurrent race deployments of small floats in Southern Ocean. Ongoing partnership with rallies allow for many, smooth and cost-free deployments, and already comprised up to 3 days de-routing of yachts. Square-rigged tall ships sail again around the world and follow traditional routes / wind patterns: Lots of space, smooth drops & onboard experts!

AST 17 March 2016 Sailing Community is eager & able to help

AST 17 March 2016 Prolarge: Charter Vessels As formerly presented, JCOMMOPS is ready to set-up cross-program deployment missions and other operations, in cooperation with the operator Prolarge – Cost-effective sailing vessels: Lady Amber has proven the feasibility to deploy and recover larger instruments, such as wave gliders, the ship is underway for SPURS-2 (10°N 125°W, 2016-17). Fair winds, Peter Flanagan…! – Innovative, economic, fast, and if necessary armed survey vessels (fuel): First delivery cruise in May

AST 17 March 2016 Ocean Eagle 43 : Range 5000 M @12 kts Less than 2 tons of fuel / day Available for support missions for JCOMMOPS from 2016 or 2017 on

AST 17 March 2016 Northern Route 7340 M 20 days Direct Route 4932 M 14 days Central Route 8125 M 23 days Southern Route 7640 M 21 days Prolarge: OE43 Simulations

AST 17 March 2016 ROM PRICE 1- Time charter contract for dedicated mission : day rate depends on volume of charter mission per year and type of area. In low risk area : 2- Examples of opportunity mission: Direct Route is a transit between Cape Town and Banda Aceh High Risk Area : +5 600€ /D Difficult navigation Area : +2 500€ /D Distance Duratio n ∆t HRA or DNA ROM Price (€) Direct Route 4932 M 13,7 days 00,00 € North Route 7340 M 20,4 days +7 days12 days152 800 € South Route 7640 M 21,2 days +7,5 days 9 days111 600 € Central Route 8125 M 22,6 days +9 days0115 300 €

AST 17 March 2016 JCOMMOPS/ProLarge Missions We propose missions through this consortium in order to -Exploit synergies, following the JCOMM spirit -Guarantee a minimum of requirements on low- cost vessels (e.g. technical check, crew training and insurance. For Lady Amber, a MoU was established with owner, captain, ProLarge and JCOMMOPS in 2013, and ever since presented as framework.

AST 17 March 2016 JCOMMOPS/ProLarge Missions Based on a request from an Argo operator, a joint mission could be set up with DBCP in 2017: -10.000 nautical miles through the Southern Pacific, possibly starting from Hawaii -Probably a sailing ship with 75 days at sea -From the Equator to 40°S latitude -125° to 170° West longitude -Argo and DBCP to consider needs and financial contribution

AST 17 March 2016 Challenges Many opportunities are not exploited and will disappear; partners are often disappointed. Setting up agreements is very time consuming; they should thus be as beneficial as possible. NGOs (e.g. Greenpeace) are willing to cooperate on deployment issues – where are our limits? Gathering and updating cruise plans is often not as simple as it could/should be... but getting better! Many (research) cruises deploy instruments, but we do not know about these plans...

AST 17 March 2016 Free of cost deployments from Research Ship “Akademik Treshnikov” can be organized and coordinated – but who is already “on board”? E.g.: Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition

AST 17 March 2016 2016 – Status Quo  Many lines are occupied frequently  New cruises are added almost daily
