Latinos Latino: Americans with Latin American or Spain family background 1960: 3 million / 2010: 35 million Cesar Chavez: Grew up on AZ farm Served in WWII Established UFW (United Farm Workers) Union Followed Gandhi and MLK – Nonviolence Won more rights for Latinos and farm workers

Puerto Ricans and Cubans Puerto Rico (Controlled by US): Natives are American citizens Many migrate to US Cuba 1959: becomes communist 200,000 fled to US / Thousands more in 1980s Both groups have faced discrimination

Native Americans After WWII: 1/3+ lived below poverty line No jobs, no opportunities 1960s: Began to organize for more rights Independence from US gov’t Teach their own history, language, and culture Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968: Protected rights under the Constitution Make their own laws on tribal land

AIM AIM (American Indian Movement) Fought for equal rights and improved living conditions 1969: Took over Alcatraz Island until 1971! Wanted to call attention to their problems 1972: Took over Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. Demanded land rights from treaties 1973: 200 members took over site of Wounded Knee massacre of 1890 Turned violent, some died Brought attention to living conditions on reservations

Americans with Disabilities 1960s & 70s: People with physical disabilities also sought equality Congress passed some laws: No barriers blocking entrances to buildings More employment opportunities 1975: Education for All Handicapped Children Act: Children w/ disabilities get equal education 1990: Americans w/ Disabilities Act: Protects against discrimination Access requirements for buildings
