2 The students will describe to what extent white migration to the suburbs contributed to an urban crisis in the big cities of America Announcement: Chapter 18/19 Test April 18- Wednesday!!!! Drill: Read “One American’s Story” on page 660 and answer the following: 1. Did James Baldwin offer a pessimistic or optimistic view of America in the 1950s? 2. Why do you think he held this particular point of view? Motivation: Was there a time when you felt over-looked or invisible?

3 By 1962-1/4 Americans were living below the poverty line White Flight In the 1950s, millions of middle-class white Americans left the cities for the suburbs They took economic resources isolated themselves from other races/classes Rural poor migrated to inner cities Between 1946 and 1960-5 million African-Americans moved from the rural South to urban areas Questions: 1. Identify four loses cities felt as people moved to the suburbs. 2. Explain the significance of each loss on city government

4 The Inner Cities Poverty grew rapidly Many thought poverty would be gone by 1970 A culture of poverty-Michael Harrington, The Other America Question: 1. Why were poor people unable to find decent housing despite the building boom in the 1950s? Urban Renewal National Housing Act of 1949 Some of the land used for roads, parks, factories, parking lots, shopping centers instead of homes

5 Mexican-American Activism Many entered US during WWI and WWII Braceros-were to return to Mexico, but many did not many were deported between 1953-55 Native Americans continue their struggle 1934 Indian Reorganization-economic, cultural, political changes 1944 National Congress of American Indians same civil rights/retain customs on reservations Termination Policy Returned tribal lands to individual Native American Eliminated federal economic support States maintained authority over tribes Abandoned in 1963-never effective
