Null and Alternative Hypothesis Joseph Reynoso Daniela Marquez
2
Null Hypothesis The Null Hypothesis is the conservative, business-as-usual statement about the population parameter. It is represented with H 0
3
Alternative Hypothesis The Alternative Hypothesis is the research hypothesis. It is usually a statement about the value of a parameter that we hope to demonstrate is true. It is represented with H a
4
Things to Remember When writing our null and alternative hypothesis note that H 0 will always be equal to ( = ) a number The alternative hypothesis ( H a ) will either be less than ( ), or not equal to ( ≠ ) the same number. The null and alternative hypothesis could be in regards to the probability/ proportion ( p ) or in regards to the mean ( μ ).
5
Which is written correctly? H 0 : p = 1.62 H a : p < 1.62 H 0 : p > 0.21 H a : p = 0.21 H 0 : p = 1.62 H a : p < 1.62 H 0 : p = 0.36 H a : p < 0.36 H 0 : p = 1.62 H a : p < 1.62 H 0 : p = 1.62 H a : p < 1.62 H 0 : p = 1.62 H a : p < 1.62 H 0 : p > 0.21 H a : p = 0.21 H 0 : μ = 1.62 H a : μ = 1.62 H 0 : p = 0.36 H a : p < 0.36 H 0 : μ = 0.16 H a : μ > 0.43 H 0 : p ≠ 1.62 H a : p < 1.33
6
Example The mother of a teenager has heard a claim that 25% of teenagers who drive and use a cell phone reported texting while driving. She thinks that this rate is too high and wants to test the hypothesis that fewer than 25% of these drivers have texted while driving.
7
Answer H 0 : p = 0.25 H a : p < 0.25
8
Null Hypothesis The null hypothesis is a hypothesis in which a researcher tries to disprove, reject, or nullify. It is represented with H 0
9
Alternative Hypothesis The Alternative Hypothesis is what the researcher really thinks is the cause of a phenomenon. It is represented with H a
