Historical Overview In 1982: Michael Jackson released the infamous “Thriller” that received wild publicity and the dance became very popular among young people The Vietnam war memorial was opened in D.C The well known movie “E.T” was released. In 1983: Sally Ride became the first American woman to go to space, became influential for women Many shows like Dallas, that aired in 1978 and became popular in the 80's, and Dynasty in 1981 were very huge at this time In 1982: Michael Jackson released the infamous “Thriller” that received wild publicity and the dance became very popular among young people The Vietnam war memorial was opened in D.C The well known movie “E.T” was released. IIn 1984: MTV Begins the "Video Music Awards" (VMAs) Indira Gandhi, the first and only female prime minister of India is assassinated The Soviet Union boycotts the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games 1985: The first version ever of Microsoft windows was released The wreck of the titanic was found 400 miles east of Newfoundland 1986: In Chernobyl the nuclear reactor explodes in the USSR The first ever triple organ transplant is executed 1980: John Lennon from the Beatles was assassinated Mt. St. Helens volcano erupts killing 57 people. General overview of fashion at the time... Women's fashion was highlighted with very colourful designs, leg warmers and scrunchies. They wore high heels and sandals. Occasionally running shoes.Jump suits and bold colours were popular. Men's fashion had many key terms such as the greased back hair, the sweater tied around the shoulders, and the colourful gulf shirts. They mostly wore dress shoes and running shoes. Kids and teens fashion consisted of very weird hair styles, jean pants and skirts, and colourful/ baggy shirts tucked into their pants. They wore running shoes and sandals. The kids/ teen's fashion form this generation is different from the previous generations because the colours where very vibrant and their clothes consisted of more patterns and material then the years before. A lso the development of the clothes became more rapid with all the demand for new fashion. Women's fashion was highlighted with very colourful designs, leg warmers and scrunchies. Such as: -Michael Jackson's Thriller music video started to bring tighter pants and leather jackets back in style along with sequins, belts and accessories. -Cyndi Lauper was also a very popular artist of the 80s. She helped popularize big messy hair, chunky jewelry and bold coloured dresses. Television and Media: - T.V shows such as Dynasty influenced the fashion world. It had 250 million viewers at the time. - E.T, The Goonies, Star Wars, Star Trek, Gremlins, The Breakfast Club, Indiana Jones, Beverly Hills Cop ect Most movies of the 1980s were comedies which created fun and exciting movie nights. Lifted spirits and moods. In the 1980s people were very bold, wore bright colours.They wanted to stand out and have fun in this era. Teenagers wanted to party, dance and be different. - Advertisement and photography also became very bold and colorful in this decade. Fashion Icons and Designers Madonna brought along the Pop scene in 1983. She introduced scrunchies, tutus and leathers that no one had seen before. She was later called "Queen of Pop" Princess Diana became an important fashion icon of the 20th century when she was married in 1981.
