Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) Part of PNS. Motor nerves to control organs. Not under conscious control. (Opposite to SOMATIC NERVES - conscious) ex. heart, breathing, pupils
3
Made of 2 Parts: SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM - Prepares your body for stress. - Increase heart rate, blood flow, glucose release from liver - Decrease peristalsis, dilate pupil, relax bladder sphincter, cause release of epinephrine PARASYMPATHETIC NERVE. SYST. - Restores normal balance. - Decrease heart rate, blood flow, stores glucose. - Increase peristalsis, constricts pupil, contract sphincter, no effect on epinephrine.
5
Made up of brain and spinal cord.
6
Protection of tissue in CNS: –Covered by 3 MENINGES outer: dura mater middle: arachnoid inner: pia mater. –Bone….skull & vertebrae –CNS contains cerebrospinal fluid for protection. (meningitis)
7
–Spinal Cord Carries sensory nerve messages from receptors to the brain and relays motor nerve messages from the brain to muscles, organs and glands. Descends through hole in skull (foramen magnum) through a canal through the vertebra

THE BRAIN 1) The Forebrain - Site of reason, intellect, memory, language and personality - most developed in humans. - Contains: paired olfactory lobes - smell AND the CEREBRUM (2 cerebral hemispheres) - folded, grey matter covered by cerebral cortex - Right side: visual patterns, spatial awareness - Left side: verbal skills, logic, math 3 Parts:
11
THE BRAIN 1) The Forebrain - Right and left joined by CORPUS CALOSSUM. 3 Parts:
12
THE BRAIN 1) The Forebrain …Each cerebral hemisphere contains 4 lobes: frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital 3 Parts: Movement, speech, intellect, personality Vision, hearing, memory Touch, temperature, emotions Vision, interpreting visual information
14
THE BRAIN 1) The Forebrain - Below cerebrum is thalamus & hypothalamus for coordinating sensory input and uniting nervous system with endocrine system 3 Parts:
15
THE BRAIN 2) The Midbrain - four spheres of grey matter. Is a relay centre for eye and ear reflexes. 3 Parts:
16
THE BRAIN 3) The Hindbrain - contains CEREBELLUM which controls limb movements, coordination and balance. 3 Parts: - the PONS relay information between the two sides of the cerebellum and between the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata. - the MEDULLA OBLONGATA regulates involuntary muscle action (the autonomic nervous system).

Stroop Test say the colors – don’t read the words RED GREEN BROWN ORANGE BLUE online neuroscience - stroop test
22
Stroop Test The clash between naming and reading makes this tricky. You are asked to name colours not read but the series of word presents and overwhelming urge to read. Scientist in 1991 identified a small area in the right side of the brain, called the anterior cingulate, that help direct our attention Why you feel the momentary confusion and why it, often, seems to lead to laughter hasn’t been explained J. Ridley Stroop, who discovered tie effect in 1930’s gave up his research in pyschology to take up bible studies and never was even aware of the excitement his test had created

BRAIN AGE The site instructions are in Japanese, so read below! 1. Touch 'start' 2. Wait for 3, 2, 1. 3. Memorize the number's position on the screen, and then click the circle from the smallest number to the biggest number. 4. At the end of game, the computer will tell you the age of your brain. 5. Forward the message and type your calculated age in the subject line. http://flashfabrica.com/f_learning/brain/brain.html

NEUROQUEST NOISY NEIGHBORS – Like neighbors who stay up at night playing their music too loud and keeping you awake, so does activity in one region of your brain interfere with the smooth functioning of a nearby region. Ex. The nerves controlling your right arm and leg are on the LEFT side of your cerebrum in the (frontal) motor cortex. The left arm and leg are controlled by a similar region in the RIGHT hemisphere.
36
NEUROQUEST EXPERIMENT 1: Sit in a comfortable chair and put out your right hand palm down. Using a counterclockwise motion, “polish” an imaginary table. Once you get going, start your right foot in the same counter- clockwise motion. EASY, right? Now REVERSE direction of your foot (clockwise) while keeping the motion of your hand (counterclockwise).
37
NEUROQUEST EXPERIMENT 2: Keep your right arm circling. Do the same as before but this time use the right arm and the LEFT leg. EXPERIMENT 3: Keep polishing with your right hand and now point your nose at the floor and trace a circle with your nose, one way then the other. Now try the same thing using your left hand.
