Indignant Ex. Sentence: “Johnny was so indignant he nearly squeaked.” ADJECTIVE Definition: angered at something unjust or wrong

Premonition Ex. Sentence: “But this church gave me a kind of creepy feeling. What do you call it? Premonition?” NOUN Definition: a feeling of evil to come

Elude Ex. Sentence: “I was trying to find the meaning the poet had in mind, but it eluded me.” VERB Definition: escape, either physically or mentally

Bewildered Ex. Sentence: “His eyes were closed, but when the door shut behind me he opened them, and I suddenly wondered if my own eyes looked as feverish and bewildered as his.” ADJECTIVE Definition: confused, overwhelmed

Exploit Ex. Sentence: “ ’... anyway, I was walking around downtown and started to take this short cut through an alley’—Two-Bit was telling me about one of his many exploits while we did the dishes.” NOUN Definition: a notable achievement

Conformity Ex. Sentence: “Soda fought for fun, Steve for hatred, Darry for pride, and Two-Bit for conformity.” NOUN Definition: acting according to certain expected standards.

Contempt Ex. Sentence: “Because Darry was standing there representing all of us, and maybe Paul felt only contempt and pity and hate for greasers?” NOUN Definition: lack of respect, dislike

Defiance Ex. Sentence: “Yet in his hard face there was character, pride, and a savage defiance of the world.” NOUN Definition: a hostile challenge

Concussion Ex. Sentence: “Exhaustion, shock, minor concussion— and Two-Bit came blubberin’ over here with some tale about how you were running a fever before the rumble and how it was all his fault you were sick.” NOUN Definition: injury to the brain caused by a blow

Acquitted Ex. Sentence: “Then he said I was acquitted and the whole case was closed.” VERB Definition: declared not guilty
