DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUES WITH PREMATURE BABIES
2
32-35 GESTATIONAL WEEKS IT IS ALREADY KNOWN THAT WHEN A BABY IS BORN PREMATURELY THERE ARE ALL SORTS OF ISSUES. 38-42 WEEKS IS CONSIDERED FULL TERM IN A PREGNANCY. AT 32 TO 35 WEEKS WE PHYSICALLY HAVE A LOT OF THE TOOLS TO SURVIVE AND LIVE AS A HUMAN BEING.
3
32-35 GESTATIONAL WEEKS STUDIES REPORTED IN 2011WERE TESTING TO SEE IF A PREMATURE BABY HAD A HIGHER CHANCE OF ANXIETY/DEPRESSION, AGGRESSION, ATTENTION DISORDERS, AND SOMATIC COMPLAINTS.
4
32-35 GESTATIONAL WEEKS THE TENDENCY TO ACT OUT WAS THE HIGHEST WITH BOYS. ONE OUT OF TEN EXTERNALIZED PROBLEM BEHAVIORS. A SIMILAR PROPORTION OF GIRLS HAD INCREASED LEVELS OF INTERNALIZING PROBLEM BEHAVIORS.
5
32-35 GESTATIONAL WEEKS THE PRETERM CHILDREN WERE NEARLY 2.5 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO INTERNALIZE PROBLEM BEHAVIORS AND JUST UNDER 70% MORE LIKELY TO ACT OUTWARDLY THAN CHILDREN WHICH WERE BORN AT FULL TERM
6
32-35 GESTATIONAL WEEKS THERE WAS ALSO NEARLY TWICE THE LIKELY HOOD TO HAVE SOMATIC COMPLAINTS AND TWICE AS LIKELY TO HAVE BEHAVIORAL OR EMOTIONAL ISSUES OVERALL.
7
32-35 GESTATIONAL WEEKS “OUR RESULTS DEMONSTRATE THAT MODERATELY PREMATURE CHILDREN ARE MORE LIKELY TO ALREADY HAVE BEHAVIORAL AND EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ENTER SCHOOL.” (BMJ, 2011) THE CONDUCTORS OF THESE STUDIES BELIEVE THAT THE CHILDREN WOULD BENEFIT FROM TARGETED HELP.
8
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS A BABY BORN BEFORE 26 WEEKS OF GESTATIONAL AGE HAD A LARGE UPHILL BATTLE TO FIGHT. HIS BODY IS NOT READY FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLD, AND IS BARELY CONSIDERED VIABLE TO HAVE A CHANCE AT SUSTAINING LIFE.
9
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS EVEN VISUALLY YOU CAN TELL THAT THE BABY ISN’T READY TO TAKE ON LIFE IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
10
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS TO BE ABLE TO LIVE, WE NEED TO BREATH. 22-28 WEEKS IS THE MINIMUM AGE OF A BABY TO HAVE A POSSIBILITY OF SURVIVING. BEFORE THAT THEIR LUNGS SIMPLY AREN’T CAPABLE OF EXCHANGING THE OXYGEN WE NEED TO LIVE.
11
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS RESEARCHERS ARE ALSO NOW FINDING THAT EVEN IN EARLY CHILDHOOD THEY MAY STILL BE AT A DISADVANTAGE. IN 2008 A STUDY WAS DONE IN THE UK ON BABIES BORN AT 25 WEEKS OR EARLIER AND SURVIVED.
12
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS THE STUDY FOUND THAT 30.6% OF EXTREMELY PRE-TERM CHILDREN WERE HYPERACTIVE COMPARED TO 8.8% OF FULL-TERM CHILDREN. THEY ALSO FOUND THAT 33.3% OF THE EXTREMELY PRE-TERM CHILDREN HAD PROBLEMS PAYING ATTENTION COMPARED TO THE 6.8% OF FULL-TERM CHILDREN.
13
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS “THEY HIGHLIGHTED A DISTINCTION BETWEEN GENDERS IN THE EXTREMELY PRE-TERM GROUP.” (UOW, 2008) IT WAS FOUND THAT BOYS HAD A HIGHER DEGREE OF BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS SUCH AS ADHD WHILE GIRLS EXPERIENCED MORE INTERNALIZING DISORDERS SUCH AS ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION.
14
BELOW 26 GESTATIONAL WEEKS THE STUDY ALSO SHOWED THAT EXTREMELY PRE-TERM BOYS WERE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS. THEY HAD A GREATER IMPACT ON THEIR PARENTS AND TEACHERS THAN THE GIRLS.
