2 The 1900’s In 1899 The Black Plague came over to the Untied States and was spread around by rats. In 1893 the Wright brothers started a bicycle repair shop. The cure for Syphilis was discovered by mistake while a doctor was studying Sleeping Sickness. In 1907 The caterpillar track was invented to help distribute the weight of tractors so they didn’t sink into the mud. The Thor was the first washing machine introduced to the people!

3 The 1910’s Willis Carrier Invented the “air conditioner” to control the temperature and humidity in the air in 1911. Arthur Clarence Pillsbury invented the time lapse camera to film wild flowers in Yosemite. In 1912 when The Titanic sank, 1 person was saved for every 2 that died. The zipper wasn’t invented until 1913. In 1918 28% of all Americans were infected with influenza.

4 The 1920’s A polygraph (Lie detector) test takes almost 2 hours! The radio was considered one of the most important inventions of all time. Charles Lindbergh was famous for two reasons: first he flew over the Atlantic ocean. Second, His son was kidnapped in 1932. While looking at the night sky in California, Hubble discovered other galaxies moving away from ours. The Empire state building took 14 months and up to 3400 people at a time. Did you Know that the Phoenicians and Egyptians used fiberglass in ancient times?

6 1940’s Research, and production of the atomic bomb became known as the Manhattan Project Popcorn was the first food to be tested with microwaves. The burs that stick to your cloths after a walk through the woods switched on the light bulb for the Swiss who invented Velcro Transistors made it possible for people to carry on their conversations over long distances The first kidney transplant took place in 1954

7 1950’s The Diners Club was the first company to issue credit cards in the United States DNA was looked at through x-ray diffraction images The first snowmobile was used by the Red Army during war RAMAC, the first hard drive, weighed a ton The largest drive in theater was the All-Weather Drive-In

8 1960s The first computer mouse was introduced, invented by Englebart 47 pounds of “lunar land” was collected after a trip to the moon The DRAW disc was invented, capable of reading information immediately after being recorded Sony introduced their first cassette tape in 1966 People were using Bell-boys to help them keep track of missed calls

9 1970’s First email system was put to use “Busicom LE-120A HANDY-LE”, a calculator sold for $395 The “walkman”, a portable music player was introduced to the public Surveillance and containment was a way to try and get rid of smallpox The first cell phone call was placed

10 1980 1,314 feet of Mt. Saint Helens was removed when it erupted. Artificial hearts were introduced. A computer called the Mac 128K was on the market during 1984-1985. The first iPod came out in 2001. 1984 people were caring around their camcorders.

11 Many things we use every day, such as cell phones, have GPS in them. Dolly the sheep was cloned from the DNA of another sheep. The 1990’s The Hubble telescope has a spectral range from ultraviolet to almost infrared There is an ethical debate over stem cell research since they must be taken from an unborn child. It will take over 100 flights to complete the space station
