Key Stage 1 Grammar and phonics – Information for Parents 8 th February 2016

-To outline the importance of grammar in the revised National Curriculum -To introduce the learning expectations for each year group across Key Stage 1 -To outline key grammatical vocabulary and concepts which are now taught as part of the revised National Curriculum -To give information about phonics screening test. Aims of the Session

Year 2 Grammar Pupils should be taught to: learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms.

Year 2 Grammar learning how to use: sentences with different forms: statement, question, exclamation, command expanded noun phrases to describe and specify, e.g. the blue butterfly the present and past tenses correctly and consistently including the progressive form subordination (using when, if, that, or because) and co-ordination (using or, and, or but)

Phonics Screening Children are given 40 words to read. 20 real 20 nonsense words. “If you can read a nonsense word you can read anything!” Usually a pass mark of 32. Week beginning 13 th June.

Set 3 sounds and spellings Another way to write the vowel sounds in words. “ow” as in blow and “ow” as in cow. “o-e” as in home, “ow” as in blow and “oa” vas in goat. Red words – words that have unusual spellings e.g. does, any.
