1 Endeavor Charter School Rising 6 th Grade Middle School Transition Meeting

2 Welcome! ● We are excited to welcome you and your child to the 6th grade. ● Middle School is an exciting time full of social and academic changes and opportunities. ● We are so honored to work with your family during such pivotal years!

3 Meet the 6th Grade Teachers ● Stacey Clemmons –Language Arts ● Larissa Peluso-Fleming – Math ● Robin Thoman – Social Studies (Fall) and Science (Spring)

4 Stacey Clemmons ● 14years experience teaching Language Arts and 3rd year at Endeavor Charter School. I taught 7th grade LA for 3 years & 6th grade LA for 11 years. I also taught 6th grade Social Studies for a year. ● Bachelor’s degree in Middle School Language Arts and Social Studies Education from NCSU. Go Pack! ● I have (almost) 4 year old twin girls, so I have become an expert at multi-tasking! ● I enjoy music, crossword puzzles, camping, listening to my daughters sing and working in the yard.

5 Language Arts – 6 th Grade ● Short stories and elements of fiction ● Mythology and folk literature ● Mini novel projects and book clubs(hands on, creative, student choices) ● Argumentative essays; Problem Solution and Evaluative ● Writing and reading Poetry ● Non-Fiction

6 Larissa Peluso-Fleming ● I began my teaching career in 2001 in Fairfax County, VA. This will be my second year at Endeavor Charter School, and I’m so excited! ● I earned my undergraduate degree in Political Science and International Economics from Mary Washington College (before it became a university). Go EAGLES! My first M.Ed. was in K-8 education (Marymount University) and my second was in Mathematics Leadership and Education (George Mason University) ● I am the proud mama of a 12 year old (Anthony), a 6 year old (Deacon), and a 3 year old (Mayzie Dai) ● In my spare time I nerd out by reading voraciously, watching The Flash with my kiddos and hubby, teaching fitness classes, and playing the violin.

7 Mathematics ● I will teach both Core & Compacted 6/7 Math (“6 Plus”) ● There will be a strong emphasis on rigorous and relevant problem-solving, real-world application, creative and innovative approaches to math, and peer collaboration. ● Hands-On Activities/ Discovery Learning/ Project-Based Learning/ Dynamic Concept-Based Thinking ● Hour of Code, Socrative, etc.- merging the beautiful worlds of technology and mathematics

8 Robin Thoman ● 15 years experience teaching science and 8th year at Endeavor Charter School ● I love reading, improv, and cooking. ● I teach social studies in the fall and science in the spring. ● We “learn by doing” using hands on activities. ● Learning is discovery based, collaborative, and fun!

9 SOCIAL STUDIES – 6 th Grade Areas of Study ● We’ll learn history from the dawn of man up to the Renaissance. That’s about 600 years of history in 18 weeks!!

10 SCIENCE - 6 th Grade Units of Study: Highlights: ●Forces Within the Earth ●Phase Changes ●Our Solar System and Space Travel ●Life Cycle of the Angiosperm ● Photosynthesis and Respiration ●Hands-on Experiments ●Field Trip to Space Camp in Huntsville AL

11 Time to learn about and develop: ● social skills and peer interaction including lessons/activities on peer relationships, bullying, and character traits. ● Academic Skills such as learning styles, time Morning Meeting (Monday-Thursday) & Clubs (Fridays): management and organizational skills. ● Clubs: Choices have included yoga, Wiffleball, Role-Playing Games, Film Feast & many others.

12 Lunch Bunch This is a great chance to volunteer and see your middle school child with his/her friends. ☺ ● 5 th grade and 6 th grade share recess ● Lunch and Recess Monday thru Friday 12:25-1:25 ● PLEASE try to join us for at least three lunches per quarter. There will be a link for the Lunch Sign- Up Genius form on our Website or Endeavor’s homepage. Sign up before the spots fill up!
