1. Solve using a number line: -8 + 3 2. Solve using counters: 7 + (-4) 3. Solve: -2 – (-5) 4. Solve” -8.54 + (-3.4)
2
Multiplying and Dividing Integers
3
1.) Use a number line to determine each product: a.) 2 3 (2 sets of 3) *Now do letters b, c, & d in your groups… 5 minutes.
4
2.) Use a table to determine the product: ExpressionDescriptionAddition Sentence Product 3 5Three groups of 55 + 5 + 5 =15 (-3) 5The opposite of 3 groups of 5 -(5 + 5 + 5) =-15 Now finish the table in your groups… 2 minutes
5
3.) Analyze each number sentence (describe the pattern you see) 4 5 = 20 4 4 = 16 4 3 = 12 4 2 = 8 4 1 = 4 4 0 = 0 And the answer is: The products decrease by 4 each time also Work on #4 in your large groups…1 minute
6
(-)(+) = (-) (+)(-) = (-) (-)(-) = (+) (+)(+) = (+) Good things happen to good people and that is good. Bad things happen to bad people and that is good. Good things happen to bad people and that is bad. Bad things happen to good people and that is bad. Also: An even number of negative signs give you a positive answer. An odd amount of negative signs give you a negative answer.
7
Skip #5, 6, and 7! 8.) What is the sign of the product of two integers when: a.) they are both positive? b.) they are both negative? c.) one is positive and one is negative? d.) one is zero? Work on # 9, 10, 11, (skip 12) and 13-15 in your groups…5 minutes. (hint: #10 write the rule! #13-15—is the answer positive or negative?)
8
For dividing integers, the rules are the SAME! #1 write the rules!!! (again) 2.) Write a fact family for -6, 8 and -48: Here is one example: -6 8 = -48 Finish #2 and #3 in your groups. If you finish, work on homework!
