The Book of Habakkuk -His name means “to embrace” or “garden plant.” (Embrace more likely) -A part of the “prophetic guild.” Most likely a music minister of his day. -Date: 640-626 BC

The Message of Habakkuk 1.) Habakkuk’s Question (1:1-2:5) -Why is God allowing evil to exist? -This process THEODICY. 2.) Habakkuk’s Woes (2:6-20) 3.) Habakkuk’s Prayer (3:1-19) -It’s in the form of a song.

The Theology of Habakkuk -When bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people, we must keep a good perspective. -No matter what comes, we can still rejoice and believe in our God’s will. -Important verses 2:2 // 2:4 // 3:17-19

The Book of Zephaniah -His name means “Yahweh hides.” He may have been hidden as an infant/child in order to avoid child sacrifice. -Family: royal. Possibly Hezekiah’s great grandson. -Date: 640-622 BC – We get this from info on Josiah’s reign.

The Message of Zephaniah 1.) The Day of the Lord (1:1-3:7) -It’s said 15 times. -Coming because of idolatry, pride, and greed. 2.) The Day of Restoration (3:8-20) -He came down hard on the people, but the final word from God is one of grace. God would restore his people.

The Book of Haggai -Name means “my feast.” Maybe born on a feast day. -Date: 520 BC – for sure because of 1:1.

The Message of Haggai 1.) Rebuild the Temple -Obstacles: complacency, disillusionment, poverty, and selfishness 2.) Obedience a.) Finish Building (1:1-11) b.) Don’t focus on appearance (2:1- 9) c.) Temple and holiness (2:20-23) d.) Zerubbabel (2:20-23)

The Book of Zechariah -Name means “he who Yahweh remembers.” -Profession: priest. Preached 2 years. -Date: 520-518 BC

The Message of Zechariah 1.) His Visions (ch. 1-8) -Four horsemen, four horns, measuring line, high priest, golden lampstand, and the olive tree. -Seems like Revelation. 2.) Two Oracles (ch. 9-14) 1 – ch. 9-11 2 – ch. 12-14 (Both focused on end of age)

The Book of Malachi -Authorship – anonymous -His name means “my messenger” -Ezra has been given credit in tradition. -Some believe it is Zechariah. -Or... a guy named Malachi wrote it. -Date: 450 BC -Purpose – to renew Messianic hope
