Common Core and Standards-based Report Cards

What is common core? Set of academic standards that 45 states have adopted Standards have been adopted for math and language arts for each grade level in Illinois

Why is this important? Currently, every state has its own set of academic standards, meaning public education students in each state are learning at different levels All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in the next state, but with students from around the world

Adoption process in D200 Committees of teachers reviewed common core standards and made changes when deemed necessary Standards were piloted and revised again Standards will be revised again after further implementation

STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICS Implemented in D200 for grades K-Algebra Fall 2013

Grade Level Crucial Concepts: Grade LevelKey Concept KindergartenLand of the ones. Students need to learn to count and have a mental number line Grade 1Concept of adding and subtracting—counting by ones and tens Use of number line instead of a hundreds chart Grade 2 Place Value—crucial Adding and subtracting two digit numbers (without traditional algorithm) Grade 3 Fractions/Concept of Multiplication and Division Grade 4Double digit multiplication/division (without traditional algorithm) Grade 5Operating with rational numbers Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Ratios, Proportions and Statistics Functions, Volume, and Irrational Numbers Algebra

STANDARDS FOR LANGUAGE ARTS Implemented in D200 for grades K- 11 th grade Fall 2014

Highlights of Common Core Emphasis on comparing two texts to each other Much more time on writing, including grammar More difficult grade level text, especially in grades 4 and 5 Continued importance of instruction on vocabulary and informational text

With new standards came… A new report card New math textbooks and materials New Individualized Reading Assessments to determine each child’s reading level

New Report Card Differences Standards-Based Grading for all subjects – Purpose of card is communicate mastery of general education expectations for each grade – List of skills that are essential for student success – Academic skills separate from social/emotional skills and work habits – Opportunity for students to show mastery after a grading period has ended – Student reading level indicated as above, on, or below

Standards-based vs. Traditional Grading Standards-basedTraditional More recent information onlyEverything marked is included Achievement onlyOften a mix of achievement, attitude, effort, and behavior From summative assessment only From formative and summative assessments Directly related to a standardUsually related to an assessment method

I, S, N for grades I = Independently demonstrates mastery S = Support needed to demonstrate mastery (more than grade level peers) N = Not yet evident

What does with support mean? Support means that the student requires accommodations beyond what the majority of the class is getting. Examples include:

What does with support mean? Support means that the student requires accommodations during an assessment beyond what the majority of the class is getting. Examples include: Use of manipulatives Use of word banks Reminder of framework/directions

English/Language Arts Grade Changes Comprehension grades based on student’s ability to read and understand grade level text Handwriting included in Learner Characteristics not as a Language Arts grade Spelling grades based on student’s ability to spell grade level appropriate words correctly in daily writing not on weekly spelling lists

P ROFESSIONAL L EARNING C OMMUNITIES @ MADISON ELEMENTARY We believe ALL students can learn at High Levels and this is our collective responsibility.

FOUR GUIDING QUESTIONS 1.What do we want students to learn or be able to do? Grade level team identifies Essential Standard(s) for each upcoming math unit 2. How will we know when they have mastered it? Pre-assess all students using a Common Formative Assessment Post-assess using another Common Formative/Summative Assessment 3. What will we do for those who have not mastered it? Grade level responds to ensure that ALL master the Essential Standard(s) 4. What will we do for those who have already mastered it? Grade level decides how to challenge and extend the learning for students that already knew the Essential Standard(s) before it was taught

Madison “Late Start” Typically, students enter the building at 9:10AM. On Thursdays, students will enter at 9:15AM. Supervisor posts rotate daily. Thursday supervisors are not PLC members. PLC Meetings in 2013-14PLC Meetings in 2014-15 8:30-8:55AM8:30-9:10AM 100 minutes/month160 minutes/month
