PPE The PPE has been an integral part of competitive sports for decades. It helps to identify athletes at risk for specific types of injuries and to identify prevention techniques for avoiding injury.

Components of the Pre-Participation Exam Station-based PPE Medical History: Review of any pertinent medical history Family medical history

Components of the Pre-Participation Exam Physical Exam Usually performed by family physician, PA, or Nurse Practicioner BP, Height, Weight, Vision, General health

Components of the Pre-Participation Exam Orthopedic Exam Usually performed by an Orthopedist, PA, PT, or ATC Examine joints for stability Examine previous orthopedic injuries

Components of the Pre-Participation Exam Medical Clearance Final medical clearance to participate in sports Full clearance Clearance after further evaluation or rehab No clearance for certain types of sports

Determination of Clearance Is the athlete at increased risk of injury because of a preexisting condition? Will the preexisting condition place another competitor at risk of injury? Will treatment allow the athlete to participate safely? Can play be limited while the athlete is undergoing treatment?
