BioGrad Teaching Laboratories are located on the top floor of Liverpool Science Park and offer state of the art facilities, within a few minutes walk of Liverpool Central and Liverpool Lime Street Train Stations Give your students the BEST residential experience possible. Allow them to learn about life as a research scientist performing both field work and laboratory analysis. The practical microbiology aspect of the residential allows students to put their theory into practice and see the applications of their studies.

…your group will be met by your course leader and a welcome lunch will be provided Students will receive all Personal Protective Equipment required for their laboratory research Students will attend a full laboratory induction that includes Risk Assessments and COSHH Students will be assigned into groups and the choices of projects will be allocated A range of choices are available, including: Microbial populations in rural vs urban environments Effect of different disinfectants/antibiotics on microbial growth Relationship between pH and aquatic microbe populations Students will be provided with background information for their assigned project Upon Arrival…

Accommodation Hatters Hostel is 2 minutes walk from Liverpool Science Park and has 13 years experience accommodating school, college and university students visiting Liverpool. Field Work Students will be provided with local maps and work in small groups for the collection of samples within the city centre.* Students will return to the laboratory with their samples ready for analysis Your students will perform their own analysis under the supervision of experienced scientists to answer real- world questions. *Some groups may wish to take public transport to collect samples from rural areas surrounding the city. This is encouraged and appropriate locations and Risk Assessments are available if required.

Students will put their training into action, using laboratory maths, microscopy and cell staining techniques to calculate colony numbers, growth rates and detect subpopulations of microbes Laboratory Analysis Students will be expected to work in groups to begin preparing their results and provide an answer for their allocated project. Group dining at a private dining room in Hatters Hostel allows students to return to their group work and finalise project presentations in the evening.

Your course leader (an experienced scientist) will deliver an overview on the range of career paths available within the different areas of scientific research Presentation Day Students then have the opportunity to present their findings to the rest of the group. Each group of students will undergo a question and answer session with the audience. ‘Best Student’ award will be given by course leader on the final day,

Costs Costs include Laboratory induction 4 days laboratory supervision and training 3 nights accommodation (Mon – Wed) Continental breakfast (Tues –Thurs) Lunch (Mon – Thurs) Evening meals (Mon – Wed) Evening activities (Mon and Tues) All laboratory PPE Costs do not include Travel to and from Liverpool Science Park Students should provide Comfortable shoes (that cover toes) for laboratory and field work Layered clothing that covers legs for laboratory Laboratory note book Laptop or tablet for preparing PowerPoint presentation (one per group) Spending money as required
