You said we did… Group sessions were too long and lacked focus Shorter Broadcasts were introduced Mentors taking up study space in the ARC whilst hot desking Mentor zones introduced Mentors not accessible on Wednesday afternoons due to team meeting One lead mentor a week to sit out of the meeting and be based in the ARC The insights programme didn’t allow flexibility HE, apprenticeships & employment combined into one category. IT, photo shop, languages & careers sessions added from student suggestions

Why Insights? Insights will give you the tools and confidence that will be expected of you after JLC. It is your chance to make your skillset adaptable and stand out from the crowd. Thanks to student feedback, we have created the progression category, which will provide a more flexible approach to exploring your options for the future. Insights will be running from the 26 th January to the end of March. You can book on to your sessions via grapevine now!

Types of Insight Sessions There are a variety of sessions available for you to choose from during the Insights program. You can tailor what sessions you choose to do based on your individual needs and interests. The categories on offer are Apprenticeships, Higher Education, Employment, Study Success/IT, Wellbeing and Barclays. Here are a few detailed examples of what you can expect from your Insight sessions

Feminism Session Equality and Diversity is promoted within college, this insight allows you to develop your understanding about gender stereotyping in modern society and the effects it has. This session will include a brief introduction to feminism, examples of gender stereotyping in the media, society and within education. There will be a variety of activities including discussions and a Q&A. There are several subjects in college that have links to feminism so this will help give you more information. It will give you the knowledge to overcome gender stereotyping for future generations.

I need a job! Help me stand out! Session The job hunt can be a very frustrating process and sometimes it is difficult to know where to start. This talk by the Job Centre Plus will provide you with information and handy tips to give you the tools to give you the edge with your job applications. The session will discuss trends in the job market, how to source those incredibly valuable training opportunities and how people can be affected through unemployment.

MOOC Sessions This session is perfect for Aspire Students or students who are looking to stretch themselves within their studies. MOOCs are a set of online courses in a diverse range of subjects, great for reading around your subjects and they look great on UCAS and job applications. This session aims to get you started on a course of your choice where you can then choose if you would like to pursue the courses further.

How many do you have to attend? There are four main categories for Insights: 1. Progression (HE, Careers & Apprenticeships) 2. Wellbeing 3. Barclays 4. Study Success/IT You will choose any 3 sessions from the Progression category and any 5 sessions from the Wellbeing, Barclays and Study Success categories. As a result of Student Feedback from last year’s Insights Program we now offer more flexibility in the sessions you can choose from. Instead of having to choose one session from each category we have offered you the ability to choose sessions from a variety of categories.

UCAS – What’s next? Once your application has been sent off, you will begin using UCAS Track to see if you have received a response. If you have been invited to an interview, book a mock interview at the Opportunities desk. Once all of your offers have come through, you can make your firm and insurance choices.

Firm choices Your firm choice is the university you are committing to go to if you meet their conditions of entry. If it’s an unconditional offer, great news! You’ll definitely be starting in September, and you won’t need an insurance choice. If it’s a conditional offer, the university will have given you grade targets to meet (i.e. 300 points or BBB).

Insurance choices Your insurance choice is effectively your back up if you fail to meet the conditions of your firm choice. For this reason, the entry requirements of your insurance choice MUST be lower than those of your firm choice. Otherwise, it will effectively be a void choice. If you are unsure of what to pick, see your Mentor!

Unconditional offers Some universities (particularly Sheffield Hallam) have started offering students an unconditional offer if they make them their firm choice. While this may seem an attractive offer, if it wasn’t going to be your firm choice initially you should discuss your options with your Mentor before making a decision.

PPE results Your PPE results will be available on Friday 23 rd January in The ARC. These results are a good indication of the level you are currently at. If you are concerned by your results, see your Mentor and we will see if we can put a strategy in place to help you improve. If your results were great, let us know too! We like good news!

Resits The resit form for Summer 2015 exams can be download from the Exams area of Grapevine. Student Services -> Exams -> Post results. The form needs to be completed and then signed by subject tutors. We will then take payments on Thursday 29 th January only (Exams staff will be located in the corridor outside the Core all day).

Tata Steel Talk Wednesday 28 th January at 15:00 in the Green and Grey room Aimed at 2 nd year STEM students and focuses on training opportunities available at TATA including 17 vacancies becoming available in Summer. Successful candidates will start with TATA on 8k a year, moving to 15k a year and then 25k for the next three years. Over this period TATA will put you through the appropriate HND and will support you through university to gain a degree. This is an opportunity to gain qualifications but without having to pay the tuition fees and will get paid a wage too!
