The English Reformation King Henry VIII Helps Reformation Ideas Spread
21
King Henry VIII
22
Why Reformation in England? King Henry VIII decides to break England away from the Catholic Church because the Pope would not Annul his marriage to Catherine of Argon (Spain) He wanted a male heir for his throne and bloodline.
23
Pope Clement VII
24
A Problem Arises Pope Clement VII will not grant King Henry his annulment, in part due to it being against the rules of Catholicism, but also because Catherine was the aunt of Charles V, the Emperor of Rome and it would have offended him.
25
Charles V
26
Was divorce the only reason for The Reformation??? As German Nobility did for Luther's revolt, King Henry saw the opportunity to break from the Pope’s power. In a sense it was a win/win situation for Henry because the people had much discontent for the corruption of the church and he could get his chance for a heir through the annulment.
27
What does this all mean??? A). King Henry did not have to kick back funding to the Pope B). Could now seize all land and wealth from Catholic Convents and give it to other nobles and friends. C). Gain support from the people disapproving of the churches corruption. D). Got a chance to get a male heir.
28
Catholicism Pre - Henry VIII When Henry became king in 1509, the church in England was as: Head of the Church : the pope based in Rome Church services : held in Latin Prayers : all said in Latin Bible : written in Latin Priests : not allowed to marry

30

31

Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, for according to the law, and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord. And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. O Lord have mercy on me, to God I commend my soul. After being blindfolded and kneeling at the block, she repeated several times: To Jesus Christ I commend my soul; Lord Jesu receive my soul. Recorded by Edward Hall (spelling modernized)
