Ionducterpro What is the next topic? Rearrange the letters to find out. Reproduction

Fold your scrap paper in half Write FEMALE on one half and MALE on the other What words do you know to name the male & female reproductive organs? Write your ideas down under the correct heading Here are the names we will use in science. Copy the keywords into your book. Reproductive system Sex cells Cervix Ovary Oviduct/Fallopian tube Uterus/womb Uterine lining Eggs (ova) Vagina Penis Sperm Testis Glands Sperm duct Urethra Scrotum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR75Y3G8PHA

What you need to know…..  Be able to label diagrams of the male and female reproductive systems (Level 5)  Be able to explain the functions of the reproductive organs (Level 6)  Be able to explain how the male and female sex cells are adapted to perform their role (Level 7)

What is reproduction?  Reproduction is one of the seven life processes (remember Mrs Gren!)  All living things reproduce  Humans use sexual reproduction to produce their young  In order to do this, the 2 parents need to have sex organs which can produce sex cells  In humans, males and females have different reproductive systems and sex organs

Reproductive Organs Sexual _____________ needs a male sex cell to join with a _______ sex cell. The _____________ organs make sex ______ (gametes) and allow reproduction to take place. REPRODUCTION FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE CELLS

The ________ reproductive system * Uterus * Vagina * Cervix * Ovary * Oviduct * female This holds the foetus in place if the egg has been fertilised. It is a muscle that closes the top of the vagina. This is where the fertilised egg would implant and develop into a foetus. This is a muscular tube that opens to the outside of the body. Sperm is deposited here. This is the tube that the egg travels down to get to the womb. Fertilisation usually happens here. These release the egg cells

The ______ reproductive system * Sperm duct * Testes * Scrotum * Urethra * Penis * Gland * Bladder * male This skin surrounds the testes, holding them outside of the body to keep sperm at the correct temperature. The sperm is produced here. The sperm travels up this tube from the testicles. This joins to the sperm duct. Semen and urine leave the penis through this. These secrete a liquid to add to the sperm. The sperm and liquid together is called semen. For placing sperm into the female

Outline the route taken from the testes by the sperm as it leaves the body Sperm leaves the testes and travels along the sperm duct...... which travels through the glands. The glands provide the sperm cells with food so that they have energy for swimming. The sperm duct joins with the urethra...... which carries the sperm out of the body.

Males produce sex cells called _______ in the testes. Females produce sex cells called ______(ova) in the ovaries. When the nucleus of an egg and a sperm fuse together, this process is called ____________. SPERM EGGS FERTILISATION Scientists need to research the reproductive system to help people have babies and also to help breed animals! * Not to scale! (not in proportion)

Male sex cells – sperm headtailmiddle piece cell membrane nucleus containing DNA How is this cell specialised for its function? Millions made every day

Female sex cells – egg nucleus containing DNA – controls cell division cell membrane jelly coat – makes sure that only 1 sperm can fertilise the egg cytoplasm – provides nutrients for embryo How is this cell specialised for its function?

 Copy and complete the table below. SpermsEggs/Ova small cannot move much no food store 1 released per month large has a tail for swimming has a food store millions made each day Extension activity…  Draw labelled diagrams of a sperm and an ovum.

Homework – Write the story of how a new life is made in the booklet. Due….. Have you filled in your exit pass? What did I know before? What have I learnt this lesson? What do I need help on? 1.Identify the main male and female reproductive organs [Level 5] 2.Explain the functions of the reproductive organs [Level 6] 3.Explain how the male and female sex cells are adapted to perform their role [Level 7] Name: Exit pass

Write down any question you have about reproduction (don’t be shy!) Put your question in the box At the end of every lesson we will try and answer a few of your questions
