Wildflowers in the Flint Hills These are some of the wildflowers you will see on the prairie in the springtime. Flint Hills Map & Education Program

Lead Plant This bushy shrub is one of the most important native legumes of the prairie. Its roots can descend as much as 16 feet. The leaves were often used to make tea and used as herbal remedies.

Prickly Pear Cactus Be SURE to watch out for this plant. If you step on it or touch it, it will HURT!!!!!!!

This is an aster. You may see many kinds of asters on the prairie.

This is Leavenworth Eryngo. It is a very pretty plant, but it would probably hurt if you touched it!

You may see some goldenrod. Some people are allergic to this. It might make you sneeze!

This is gayfeather. It looks like a purple feather !

Blue sage (Pitcher sage) is very nutritional to cattle. It’s roots go down 6- 8’ in the ground.

You may see lots of sunflowers. Kansas is the sunflower state!

Blue false indigo is a beautiful flowering plant that is a member of the bean family. When mature, loose seeds in the pods will rattle in the wind.
