Spirituality and religion are an inherent part of every ethnic or cultural group. Spirituality and religion ARE NOT the same.

Spirituality Beliefs individuals have about themselves, their connections with others, and their relationship with a higher power Also described as an individual’s need to find meaning and purpose in life Individualized and personal set of beliefs and practices that evolves and changes throughout life

RELIGION Organized system of belief in higher/ superhuman power Beliefs/ practices are associated with a church Beliefs about life, birth, death, and illness usually have a religious origin Can effect dietary practices A religion may establish certain beliefs/ rituals – not everyone will follow all

Non Believers Atheist: does not believe in ANY deity Agnostic: believes the existence of God cannot be proved or disproved

Health care workers must determine what individuals personally believe and RESPECT their beliefs! Every effort must be made to allow individuals to express their beliefs, practice their rituals, or follow their diet. If it WILL NOT HARM or INJURE the individual.

Showing Respect 1.Be a willing listener 2.Provide support for practices 3.Respect religious symbols and books 4.Allow privacy during clergy visits or while the patient is observing customs 5.Refrain from imposing your own beliefs on the patient
