2 Aims and Objective  To develop an understanding of the advantages of diversity in society  To develop an understanding of the effects of discrimination  To discuss relevance to placement/practice 2

3  People understand that all people are different and respect their individual differences 3

4  Because people are able to appreciate other people differences it enable society to appreciate and celebrate more individual differences. 4

5 People understand that all people are different and respect their individual differences.  It is important to mention that there are differences in all of us and our families. Other differences may occur through nationality, language, culture, religion background etc. 5

6 More interesting society is created  Different opinions, beliefs and festivals are taught and celebrated in school, which enriches people both personally and socially.  Culturally people will experience more enrichment- food, cultures, religions, languages etc. People may feel more encouraged to travel and learn new skills and develop an understanding for even more cultures, therefore further enriching society. 6

7 People will feel they have an identity which in turn benefits their self esteem.  If people feel comfortable in who they are then is assist in developing a more harmonious society where people can develop their potential 7

8 People will be able to contribute to society in a variety of different ways bringing different skills and attributes.  Therefore society as a whole develops and gains from this diversity. For example different cultures may have different skills i.e. cooking or language skills and these can be passed on to other people. 8

9  Diversity can play a positive role on social harmony as people understand that the world is made up of many differences which should be respected. Through understanding about differences it is less likely that there will be social conflict or discrimination. 9

10  Can you think of something a skill or a quality which you have which is different? – perhaps language or an understanding of religion- what is the benefit of this for you? and for society? 10

11  What are the potential effects of discriminatory practice 11

12  Individuals and groups could feel isolated and discriminatory practice could have a negative effect on their emotional health. 12

13  Groups or individuals could feel socially excluded in their communities which could also have a detrimental effect on the community in which they live. 13

14  Society as a whole could miss out if certain groups are discriminated against as there would not be a rich diversity and the economics of the country which be affected due to the reductions in diversity of skills 14

15  In some situations discriminatory practice can result in social unrest. If a group feels that they are discriminated against by a more dominant group this could result in tension. 15

16  In health and care situations discriminatory practice could have numerous effects on services These could include loss of dignity, feeling isolated, low self esteem and deteriorating health. 16
