What Brought us on This Journey
Children notice difference and experience discrimination at a very young age. The question is: Does stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination and racism harm children’s educational and life chances? Does inequality affect children’s education and life chances? Does discrimination hurt? Do acts of discrimination harm all children?

What Brought us on This Journey
Some questions which needed to ask of ourselves (as trainers and practitioners): Do I recognise, respect and celebrate diversity? Do I ensure each child’s (individual and group) identity is supported ? Do I confront troublesome issues or do I cover them up? Do I need to do things differently to make the above happen?

We must always bear in mind the importance of attitudinal change when discussing equality issue ...The time is now right with increasing Government commitment and attention to childcare, early childhood education and in particular the commitment to develop and inclusive society. Expert Working Group on Childcare (1999)
The childcare environment must reflect a diverse inter-cultural and anti-discriminatory approach. There should be a wide range of appropriate equipment and images reflecting the background of all children … It should also provide an accessible and safe environment for children who could experience discrimination.

Awareness of diversity issues is not enough. It is behaviour that counts (Judith Katz) The training delivers for both work with children and adults to support ongoing positive change in the ECCE setting.
