1 Level 3: Unit 2 P3/M1

2 Starter Watch the video called ‘Three stories’. It shows how the Mental Capacity Act empowers and protects people who lack the capacity to make some decisions for themselves. Write up some notes about when and how individual rights can be overridden.

3 P3 Task 7: Write a report about the potential effects of discriminatory practice on service users. You should include: – marginalisation, – disempowerment, – low self-esteem and self-identity, – restricted opportunities, – negative behaviours such as aggression or criminality; – as well as loss of rights such as overriding individual rights (e.g. by the use of power and force, or statutory powers). 4 Presentation As we have already learned discriminatory practice has negative effects on those who are cared for, you will be researching these effects in more detail. You will be divided into small groups. Each group will be given a part of the topic to research and prepare a PowerPoint presentation about. Remember, you work in a residential home! You will be prepared to present these in 30 minutes.

5 M1 You need to assess the effects of three of the discriminatory practices on service users in the residential home where you work. An assessment means giving a careful consideration of the possible impact of each of the three discriminatory practices on the service user and identify which are the most important and relevant, with reasons.
