THE TED TALK PROJECT/ACTIVITY You will write a quality opinion paragraph/essay That explains your opinion well with: Opinions, facts, arguments, examples, details, and refutations You will learn your paragraph ‘by heart’ Memorize your paragraph/essay for your TED Talk Presentation You will present your topic to the class You must use PowerPoint, A Poster, or a white board Created by K.s.

CONSIDER YOUR OPINION Make a list of 2 or 3 different ideas, then submit to Mr. S Choose a topic that - you care about + people can agree or disagree with + has good supporting reasons Have back-up topics ready, in case - Your first choice might be too controversial or not specific enough. Everyone must do it individually, but groups of 2 can be made for the auditorium TED Talk event – Partners must be presenting the same topic. A good opinion paragraph: Is often about a controversial issue Creates intelligent, respectful debate Gives the writer’s opinion about the topic Explains facts to support the opinion Makes the audience think about the issue seriously Can make the reader reconsider their own opinion Balances both sides of the argument (but can focus mostly on writer’s opinion) Created by K.s.

What is the difference between fact and opinion? Facts Can be proven to be false or true Examples The sun is hot. Turkey is not yet a part of the EU. Mr. Kevin is a teacher at TED. The language you use to express your Opinion Paragraph Topic Sentences Introduces your opinion + Summarize main reasons I think people should consider being vegetarian for many reasons. Although unhealthy food can be delicious, I think being healthy is important for a number of reasons. Transitions when providing reasons Fırst, I think that society should support green energy. To Start, I think health care is a human right. To begin with, we need to express our opinions carefully. Second, all students should be able to play sports during breaks. Thirdly, an app such as Lumosity improves thinking skills. Next, to be healthy, we need to watch what we eat. Another reason to invest in clean energy is to save the Earth. Most importantly, doping should be banned in sports since it’s not fair In addition, an app such as Lumosity develops mental speed. Finally, I think we all need to realize what we are doing to the Earth. Lastly, we have technology to help everyone, so let’s do it! To end with, education needs to see value in getting students to think. One last reason is to improve living standards for everyone. Transitions when coming to a conclusion In conclusion, although eating meat is delicious, it is better to be vegetarian for many reasons. All in all, Playstation is a much better gaming experience than Xbox. As you can see, in order to have great conversations, we need to be openminded, rational, and respectful of everyone. To sum it up, school uniforms have more advantages than disadvantages. To summarize, being healthy gives us more energy, more confidence, and more balanced emotions. Finally, technology can make us more alone if we let it control our attention.
