[7 GUM, approx. 4 style] 14c. It is all right to write the way you talk if you are sending a text message to a friend; it is not a good idea if you are writing an essay, paper, or application, though. 14c. Informal writing suffices [is fine] for sending text messages to friends; however, it diminishes essays, papers, or applications.

Got a burning question about your research project? Write it on a note card, and Ms. Walters will collect it during the warm-up and try to address it during BDB. FIRST PRIORITY goes to questions that are concrete and specific. (Ms. Walters cannot guarantee that an entire page of your paper is “on the right track” in a two-minute assessment.)

Copy the following and correct the grammar/ spelling. Then repair style by writing a new sentence. Underlining and quotation marks are NOT errors. 14D. It is very important to revise your paper at least once before submiting it. There are many things that should be checked. Including parenthetical citations, and style. For example, you should be very alarmed if one or more of your citations starts with the word “Gale”. This almost always indicates that you have not followed directions on the parenthetical notes guide, making your paper very, very difficult to grade. Copy the sentence and then make approx. EIGHT GUM corrections. INSTEAD of rewriting for style, just circle and label three style problems that do NOT appear in the quotations. HINT: Focus on main verbs and overly used words. 14E. A example of overgeneralization would be: “Before the Post modern time period, americans did not believe in kids of different Ethnicitys going to school together.” Overgeneralizations are made by using always, never, or just failing to qualify a general statement. A overgeneralization can be fixed by qualifying it. For example, “Before the Post modern time period, few americans believed in kids of different Ethnicitys going to school together.” 14E. An example of overgeneralization would be an unqualified statement: “Before the postmodern time period, Americans did not believe in kids of different ethnicities going to school together.” Overgeneralizations are made when writers use words like always and never; they also occur when a writer fails to qualify a general statement. An overgeneralization can be fixed by qualifying it. For example one might say, “Before the postmodern time period, few Americans believed in kids of different ethnicities going to school together.” 14E. One type of overgeneralization is an unqualified statement: “Before the postmodern time period, Americans did not believe in students of different ethnicities going to school together.” One can avoid overgeneralizations by omitting casual use of words like always and never, as well as carefully qualifying general statements. For example one might say, “Before the postmodern time period, few Americans believed in children of different ethnicities going to school together.”
