3. Step 1: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Step 2: Find the verb. -Is the verb a linking verb or action verb? -If the verb is a linking verb, you cannot have a direct object. 5.  IO =indirect object: must be a noun or pronoun -You cannot have an indirect object without a direct object Follow steps 1-4 from previous pattern Step 5: After you find the DO, ask “to whom?” -The answer is the indirect object
