Hamlet Symbol and Theme Notes
2
Search for Identity (again) Question of “who’s there”? (1.1) – Question for the entire play – No one is who they say they are Really old King Hamlet’s ghost? Claudius’ true intentions? Gertrude’s loyalty? Prince Hamlet really in mourning? – Characters are literally (‘cause it’s nighttime) and figuratively in the dark
3
Quest and Proof of Manhood (again) The ghost vs. …. – His brother: Claudius is a drunk, power hungry, and a womanizer – His son: Prince Hamlet is a prude, and wrapped up in words, rather than action Suggestion that a dead guy is more effective than the rightful heirs to the Danish throne
4
Loyalty and Power Audience is forced to chose who to be loyal to: a ghost, a prude, or a murderer. Prince Hamlet plays a role (a play within a play?) – Be being “mad” (literally and figuratively), he can get away with anything – Audience is an accomplice we are always in Hamlet’s head
5
Hard to decide whether Hamlet is acting this role, or has become this role – More powerful to be insane or not? Old vs. New – Old regime was one of action King Hamlet would invade, conquer, and murder to get things done – New regime is one of policy and words Claudius “poured poison” in Hamlet’s ear Politics (Claudius) wins out over heroics (Hamlet) Rumor and dishonesty is what killed Hamlet, just as much as that actual murder
