2 Why Asia ? : Diverse & geographically dispersed region  Tropical & subtropical (H&H and H&D)  Temperate (Cool to cold )  Wet : High rainfall (> 2,000 mm) to Dry : (< 5mm)  Many food habits  Several Crops & Diseases  Specific disease ( BW, PBNV, TNRV and others)  Many culture & Language  Rich to poor GDP per capita from € 0.5 k to € 27 k

3 Asia Fast growing Veg. mkt: 1.1 bn€ in 2011 to 1.5 bn € by 2015 Growth in JP/KR/AUS/NZ/TN is stable ~ 5-25% growth in other market SA&SEA total veg market is ~300 mn€ growing to 511 mn € by 2015 Market growth is ~ 20-45% in 5 years depends on countries Value addition by new traits OP to F1 conversion Vegetables in Asia

7 What’s the Purpose ●Develop a platform where growers, public and private sector researchers discuss together ●Address specific problems of Asia with focus to solanaceae ●Identify and list down problem and issues ●Develop projects to address those issues ●Identify lab & Researchers/Scientist/Breeder for collaboration

8 What’s the Purpose ●Strengthen public and private sector collaboration ●Avoid duplication of work for better utilization of resources ●Offer a forum where latest advances are shared among the scientists ●Develop brand image of Asian scientist & their work ●Be recognized and respectful

9 Vision of ASRT Offer a forum for the discussion of Research, Breeding and Breeding technology issues relevant to Solanaceous crops; Address issues for the benefit of farmers; and Strengthen public-private sector partnerships, all in the Asian region
