What is STAAR Alternate? The TEA developed the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Alternate to meet the diverse needs of students enrolled in grades 3 through high school with significant cognizant disabilities. STAAR Alternate is not a traditional paper or multiple-choice test. Assessment involves teachers observing students as they complete state-developed assessment tasks that link to the grade-level or high school course curriculum through prerequisite skills. 5 Copyright © 2013 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. Training Requirements Teachers who administer the STAAR Alternate assessment are required to complete all four online training modules and pass the qualification activities. Teachers who passed all four modules in 2012-2013 do not need to requalify. Teachers who were not able to pass one of the modules last year will be required to view the module and pass the qualification before they are given access to the Assessment Management System for the 2014 STAAR Alternate administration. Training Requirments A score of 80 percent or above for each qualification activity is required before a teacher is authorized to administer the assessment. A teacher has two attempts available for each qualification to score 80 percent or above. Copyright © 2013 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 7

Training Requirements If a test administrator is unable to pass a qualification activity with 80 percent accuracy after two attempts, the district will need to determine if the test administrator will receive a third and final attempt after supplemental training support has been provided. It is the responsibility of the district to determine who will provide the supplemental training support and the content of the training. This determination should be based on the content of the module that was not passed, the experience of the teacher needing the support, and the expertise of the supplemental support provider. Training Requirements If the teacher is approved for the third and final attempt, the district or campus testing coordinator will provide the teacher with the password needed to access the final qualification attempt. The password for the third and final attempt should be kept secure by the testing coordinators and not issued to anyone other than a teacher who has completed the required supplemental training support. If the test administrator fails the final attempt, the district or campus testing coordinator will determine if the test administrator will be allowed to administer the assessment under careful supervision by a district administrator. Supplemental Training Support Copyright © 2013 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 10 The person providing the supplemental training support must function in a supervisory or support capacity for the campus, district, or region and not be a peer of the teacher. A STAAR Alternate test administrator cannot be a supplemental support provider for another teacher unless that person directly supervises the individual needing the support. A supplemental support provider must have viewed all four of the training modules and passed all four of the qualification activities without receiving supplemental support.
