1 Chapters: 8,9,10,13, and 15 SHANE L., JASON M., & TYRONE B.

2 Chapter 8: “Defining Racism”  Information we don’t learn create stereotypes.  A person who’s never known a African American author. “it’s not my fault that blacks don’t write.”  Racism and Prejudice are not the same thing.  Prejudice is a preconceived judgment or opinion.  Racism is a system of advantages. (Society)  White Privilege  A white women on welfare: suffers from Sexism, and classism, but still has white privilege.

3 Chapter 9: “A Different Mirror”  The general history of almost every immigrant or racial event.  Jewish, Irish, Asian Americans, Japanese, Chinese, African Americans, and Native Americans (Indians).  Jewish people stood along side African Americans when they were fighting for their rights.  Chinese workers were used to suppress an Irish immigrant strike.  Martin Luther King Jr. quote: “We will reach the goal of freedom in Birmingham and all over the nation, because the goal of America is freedom. Abused and scorned though we may be, our destiny is tied of with America’s destiny.”

4 Chapter 10: “Symbolic Racism, History, and Reality  Racism against Native Americans is so ingrained in the American consciousness that it has become invisible, this type of racism is called “Dysconscious Racism”  Native Americans as a whole suffer from low self esteem due to the historical racism/atrocities and the modern Dysconscious racism of today  As a result of this Native Americans have higher rates of homicide, suicide, drug abuse/alcoholism and high school dropouts  American’s need to become aware of this type of racism and learn to overcome it and recognize Native Americans are People, not just cartoons and mascots

5 Chapter 13: “Towards the New Consciousness”  The Fifth Race that embraces the four major races of the world forming a hybrid progeny to form a more mutable, malleable species that has a rich gene pool which will in turn create “Mestiza Consciousness” this race is called the “Cosmic Race”  Mestiza Consciousness is a Consciousness of Duality  Mental Nepantilism- this is an Aztec word that means “torn between ways”  This chapter deals with how a person deals with duel identities like being half White and Native American or Being African American and a Woman

6 Chapter 15  Immigration policy's are made for profit, not civil rights.  Immigrants are scapegoated to push economic goals  Racial, religious etc. profiling is a prominent fear in the immigrant community  There is really no push for civil rights for immigrants.

7 Group Discussion  To help end prejudice, what are some solutions you can think of?  What type of prejudice/racism do you encounter on a regular basis?  Why does the U.S. government sacrifice civil rights for the profit when it comes to immigrants?  What can the Government do more to help make amends for past transgressions in America?
