5 Today we’re going to review a few cultural difference! We’re going to talk about some common celebrations that all cultures celebrate! We’re going to do some group work. As you go through these occasions and customs, think of your own cultural customs!

6 Group Activities In groups of 5 or 6 students get together and discuss: – the similarities and differences between your country’s customs and other country’s customs. Topics will be assigned Read topics and discuss. Then discuss and answer the questions! You will be given about 10 or 15 minutes.

7 Group Presentations Now, we’re going to listen to the presentations! – Listen to the groups and the information. – Fill in the answers for each group – Pay attention! You’ll need this for later… There are rewards~ ^^

For Americans, you must make as much noise as possible to keep the evil spirits away. 2.What is lucky for the Chinese and the Spanish? Eating an even number of dishes brings double the luck for the Chinese. Seaweed brings good luck for the Chinese. Eating 12 grapes at the chimes at midnight brings luck for the Spanish 3.What is Korean News Years like? Compare and contrast your country to other countries! (Janet teacher: I’m interested to find out!)

9 Model Answer: Weddings 1. What brings good luck for the Italians? The Italians eat doughnuts in the shape of bowties to bring luck. The bride also eats sugared almonds to bring luck for a new born baby. 2. What does tossing rice at the new married couple mean? In America, when the marriage is over, people usually toss rice at the happy couple to give them good luck in having a child. 3.What are some Korean wedding customs? (Janet teacher: You tell me!)

10 Model Answer: Birthdays 1. Where and when did people believe that ghosts and spirits would come on their birthdays? People believed that ghosts and spirits would come on their birthday in Europe during the middle ages. 2. What do the people in Mexico do on birthdays? In Mexico people fill a paper animal with sweets. This is called a Piñata. Children close their eyes and hit the animal until the sweets fall out. Then everybody eats the sweets. 3. What are some special Korean customs for birthdays? What are some differences and similarities? (Janet: I want a Korean birthday party…)

Which greeting is the most interesting to you? Why? I find the ______ greeting the most interesting because __________________. Example: I find the French greeting the most interesting because kissing should be done only between your loved ones or your boyfriend/husband. 3. How do Korean people greet each other? Which greetings are similar and which greetings are different? (Janet teacher: Who’s willing to teach me?)

What are some gestures that are completely opposite from Korean culture? ___________ is the complete opposite in Korean culture. Example: Looking someone in the eyes when you are getting in trouble is the complete opposite in Korean culture. 3. What are some interesting Korean gestures? (Janet teacher: I don’t know you’re going to have to tell me~)
