2 Objectives Students will familiarize themselves with the Roadtrip Nation & Resume builder features of Family Connection. Students will learn about the different components of a resume. Students will have the opportunity to explore features of Roadtrip Nation on their own and begin to create their resume through their Family Connection account.

5 Roadtrip Nation As you continue through high school and beyond it’s important to take time to think about what you want for your future. Think about: What you really love to do? Your interests, values & talents?

6 Words of Roadtrip Nation What’s Your Roadtrip: A life-changing journey; to define your own Road and pursue your interests in life by seeking advice from others and looking inside yourself to figure out what you are truly passionate about. Leaders: Individuals interviewed on the Road who share the insights and perspectives they gained as they defined their own Roads in life. Themes: Leaders address their own trials and learning related to the particular theme (e.g. risk, determination). Interests: A subject or activity that you feel a strong connection to, which you are willing to continue exploring. Basing your studies on your Interests may offer you the greatest chance of achieving happiness and satisfaction with your future (e.g. medicine, art).

10 Roadtrip Nation Create Your Own Road (take 10 minutes to explore)  First take short Questionnaire called Define Your Road  Then explore careers by Interests, Themes, Leaders, or Playlists

11 Resume Roadtrip Nation can help you start thinking about what careers and/or interests you may want to pursue. But in order to obtain a job, you need to have a resume! In order to create your resume go to the About Me tab Go to Resume

12 The Resume What is a resume? What do you need a resume for? What information will you find on a resume?

13 Contact Information Your Information: Name, address, email, PHONE NUMBER Example: Sally B. Jones 15721 Forest Park Drive Woodbridge, VA 22193 Sally.Jones@gmail.com

14 Objective The resume objective tells an employer or college what you are looking to do for a job or what kind of college you are looking to attend. Example: “I am seeking admission to a distinguished college or university for the fall of 2017”

15 Education List the high schools you have attended Include your expected year of graduation You may want to note your GPA, class rank, or courses you are taking that are applicable to the application Example: Forest Park High School Expected Graduation: June, 2018 GPA: 3.8 Taking Advanced Placement English and Economics

16 Work Experience Include all work experience List in chronological order with the most current work experience first Include active descriptions of the tasks and duties your job entailed Example: Baby-sitter (06/08 – present) Minneapolis, MN Provide safe environment for two children twice a week Maintain family rules and routines Prepare healthy meals

17 Volunteer Experience Include all volunteer experiences List in chronological order with the most current volunteer experience first Examples: Reading Tutor, Graham Park Middle School – 2014 Key Club – 2013 Relay for Life – 2012

18 Extracurricular Activities List the extracurricular activities in which you are involved List clubs, organizations, sports, or other groups to which you belong You may also include dates or grade of participation Examples: Junior Varsity Basketball (10 th grade) Robotics Club (9 th -10 th grade) Quiz Bowl (9 th -10 th grade) Softball (8 th -present)

19 Skills and Strengths List the skills and strengths you possess that are a good fit for the job, college, or scholarship to which you are applying Examples: Strong oral and written communication skills Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point Responsible Flexible and Open-minded Strong Interpersonal Skills Providing specific examples of ways you’ve demonstrated these strengths and skills is helpful

20 Awards and Honors List any recognition you have received Examples: “A” Honor Roll (9 th -10 th grade) Perfect Attendance (9 th Grade) McDonald’s Employee of the Month (June, 2014) Peace Essay Contest Winner (February, 2014)

21 References Include people who can give a good recommendation about your strengths and skills Can include work supervisors, teachers, ministers, coaches, volunteer coordinators, etc. Do not include friends or family You may list “references available upon request” or include 2-3 references with contact information on your resume Do not include references unless you ask them first!
