Objectives Knowledge: Students can name three examples of healthy food, exercise, and sleep choices when viewing healthy choice flash cards. Comprehension: When given a making good choices worksheet, the students are able to decipher and identify at least 3/4 of the examples which are good personal health decisions and practices. Application: Students will create a graphic organizer which will include at least 12 magazine cut out images that represent examples of healthy nutritional, sleep, and exercise choices. Analysis: When given a cause and effect worksheet, the students are able to match 8 out of 10 healthy behaviors with the correct effect. Synthesis: In groups, the students will discuss and arrange a plan of a total of 6 nutritional, exercise, and sleep behaviors and decisions to share with family and practice at home. Evaluation: When given an examination sheet, the students will determine good from poor nutritional, exercise, and sleep behaviors and decisions correctly answering at least 9 out of 12.

Summary This is a health education lesson plan created for a first grade general education class in a public school system. There are 4 exceptional learners with learning disabilities integrated in the classroom. The goal for this lesson is for all students to understand the effect that good and bad nutritional, sleep, and exercise decisions and behaviors can have on their personal health. The students will learn the importance of making good health choices. Adjustments will be made for exceptional learners, students needing extra guidance, and for unexpected issues that may occur throughout the lesson.

Learning Context Health: This lesson and instructional procedure is a beginning unit to the students understanding of health behaviors and decisions. The students will follow with units that cover safety and problem solving. Student collaboration in the lesson will help build student skills related to problem solving in future lessons.

Task Analysis/Procedures Steps for learning essentials: 1. Preinstruction/objective a. Students will study graphic organizers displaying pictures of healthy nutrition, exercise, and sleep choices, food pyramid, and vocabulary words that are placed on board. Exceptional learners receive highlighted words at desk with personal flash cards. b. Students will discuss personal experiences to good and bad behaviors and choices. What happened and why? All students will interact and share in a classroom discussion. c. Students will then discuss what they believe the objective of the lesson is.

2. Healthy and unhealthy behaviors and decisions using graphic organizers. a. Explain healthy and unhealthy nutrition choices. Give examples of both. b. Explain healthy and unhealthy exercise choices. Give examples of both. c. Explain healthy and unhealthy sleep choices. Give examples of both. d. Students collaborate with one partner and together pick an example of each using flash cards to share with the classroom. Exceptional learners will be placed with students/peers showing strong understanding in subject and will be able to use picture cues.

3. Good choices image worksheet. Work individually. a. Students will circle all healthy choices in green crayon. b. Students will place a red x on all unhealthy choices. Exceptional learners may use picture cues on desk and will receive assistance from teacher or aide.

4. Create graphic organizer. a. Students will choose a variety of magazines. b. Students will locate 12 pictures or images that show healthy behaviors and decisions that are related to nutrition, exercise, and sleep and cut them from magazine. c. Students will paste images in appropriate category on a sheet of construction paper. Exceptional learners will receive guidance from teacher or aide with locating images and cutting. They will only need to locate 9 images, and may also use cues at desk.

5. Matching worksheet a. Students will draw a line to match a healthy behavior with its corresponding effect. Exceptional learners will receive assistance from teacher or aide and may use picture cues.

6. Healthy behavior and decision plan developed in group collaboration. a. Students gather in groups of 3 to discuss healthy personal choices. Students rotate around table each participating and sharing ideas. Exceptional students will be joined with students/peers showing strength in subject. b. Groups will discuss and decide six healthy choices. Two choices from each group (nutrition, exercise, and sleep). c. Students will label three categories in personal journals (nutrition, exercise, and sleep). Then write their healthy choices in each section. Exceptional learners will receive guidance from teacher or aide with labeling and writing. d. Students will go home with journals and share with their family. e. Students will then attempt to make each of the healthy choices at home and have a family member sign when the student completes each one. Exceptional learners may receive help at home with reading healthy choices and making good decisions. f. Students return journals to school, regroup, and discuss their results.

7. Healthy behaviors and decisions evaluation a. Students will receive a true and false evaluation worksheet. b. Students will determine if an image is a healthy behavior or choice. c. Students will mark each image with a T or F. Exceptional learners will receive guidance from the teacher or aide with instructions and writing, and they will receive 10 extra minutes.

Collaboration Students will work collaboratively & individually. Students will work in groups of 3. Time Allotment 6 class periods. 30 min. per class.

Instructional Materials (handouts, etc.) Materials needed for lesson are graphic organizers, food pyramid, flashcards, construction paper, scissors, crayons, worksheets, and personal journals. Exceptional learners will need picture cues and highlighted vocabulary words. Resources Technology resources: PowerPoint Will use PowerPoint to develop a graphic organizer.

Assessment In groups, the students will discuss and arrange a plan of a total of 6 nutritional, exercise, and sleep behaviors and decisions to share with family and practice at home. Each student will go home with their plan and practice healthy behavior and decision choices through nutrition, exercise, and sleep. They will then check off each healthy behavior and decision they make and have their parents sign next to each check as they practice at home. There will be a comment box for students and parents to write feedback or observations regarding student choices. The students will then return back to school with their sheets and signatures. They will then regroup and discuss how each student felt after making healthy decisions and making good choices. After their discussion, the students will then each draw a picture of how they believe they will feel as grownups if they continue to have healthy behaviors and make healthy decisions throughout life. Accommodations for exceptional learners. Exceptional learners will receive some cues using pictures of healthy choices when developing plans within the group. Exceptional students will receive additional teacher guidance and will be placed with a peer who shows strength in content during group time. They will also receive help with writing plans down to bring home to family. Exceptional learners will need a total of 4 nutritional, exercise, and sleep behaviors and decisions to share with family.
