Goal  My goal is not to tell you what you should be doing on/off line or in your own privacy  My goal is to educate you by providing you tools and information to help you have a better understanding of how your online and offline activity can affect you now or in the future What you do with the information is up to you

4. How safe are your choices? What are you posting online ? What information could a stranger find out about you online ? Are you oversharing ?

5. What about Texting ?  What are you sending out?  Is the information private and meant only for the receiver's eyes?  What if that information was shared or forwarded to others?  Could that information negatively impact your reputation or your life now or later?

8. Before you share ask yourself?  Who might I hurt?  Do I like what this says about me?  How could this impact my future?  Could this get me into trouble?  Would the adults in my life think this is appropriate?

9. “Your Photo Fate” - SEXTING  Once you send it, there is no going back  You do not get to choose where the photo ends up  If it ends up on the internet, it is there forever with a guarantee to be shared over and over  It can be used to bully or blackmail you or used to get you in trouble

10. Sexting continued…  Boys vs. Girls  Do you trust him not to forward the sext or share it? How about next week? Or next month ? How about when you are no longer seeing each other ?

11. Recognizing Online Predators  Usually male  Honest about being adults  Target females and males  Clear about intentions  Attracted by certain behaviors

12. Grooming A predator might: Flatter you send you gifts Discuss adult subjects Ask you to keep secrets Turn you against your family & friends Share or ask for revealing images Blackmail you

15. Discussion: What are some of the reasons the teens in the above slides began to reach out to someone online they did not know ?

16. Discussion continued:  Tough circumstances (parents divorcing, fall out with friends, school etc.)  Looking for someone who would understand them, would side with them and see things their way  They did not think they had anyone else to turn to  Looking for someone who would put them first

17. Safety Considerations:  Are the people online telling the truth about themselves? (name, age, where they live, provided pictures, their story) How do you know?  What is their motivation or intent to talk to these teens online?  Anonymity  Teens are trusting, naïve, easily manipulated

18. Dangers of Talking to Strangers on the internet  While talking with people online teens and adults alike feel they are safe to say whatever is on their mind  They may provide information without thinking it through. (what school they attend, their home address, phone number, where they work and their hobbies)  Are you providing information about yourself or your family?  Can someone find you?  Are you putting yourself at risk?

19. You’ve consented. What exactly did you consent to? You agreed to a partake in a sexual act but did not agree to have it recorded.

Case Example:  Consensual sexual act between three teens  One of the teens took a picture of the act without the knowledge or consent of one of the other parties  That picture was then texted to a fourth party who was dared to upload it to the internet for all to see  Legal/Personal repercussions

21. Case Example:  Two teens consent to a sexual act  One of the teens video recorded the act without the other’s knowledge or permission  The video was shared with others  The victim teen learned of the video only after others began to talk about it

Case Example:  Male teen receives a Facebook message from someone who he believes is a friend of a friend  He begins talking to this female through FB messaging and accepts her FB friend request  He soon realizes the female is not a friend of a friend but he continues to chat with her anyway  She convinces him to take a picture of his penis  He takes the picture to include his face  After receiving the pic she tells him if he does not send her $300 then she will send the picture to all of his FB friends  Investigative challenges

WA State Law Sexual Exploitation of a Minor (RCW 9.68A.040) A person is guilty of the above if the person: A) Compels a minor by threat or force to engage in sexually explicit conduct, knowing that such conduct will be photographed or part of a live performance B) ** Aids, invites, employs, authorizes, or causes a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct knowing that such conduct will be photographed or part of a live performance … Sexual exploitation of a minor is a Class B Felony – Up to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $20, 000 or both

25. WA State Law Continued… Possession of Depictions of minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct (RCW 9.68A.070) A person commits the crime of above (1 st degree) when he or she knowingly possesses a visual or printed matter depicting a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct. ** For the purposes of determining the unit of prosecution under the subsection, each depiction or image constitutes a separate offense. This crime is a Class B Felony.

WA State Law Continued… Dealing in depictions of minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct (RCW 9.68A.050) Knowingly develops, duplicates, publishes, prints, disseminates, exchanges, finances attempts to finance, or sells a visual or printed matter that depicts a minor engaged in an act of sexually explicit conduct Each depiction or image can constitutes a separate offense. A first degree offense is a Class B Felony. A second degree offense is a Class C Felony (up to 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both).
