2 Goals of Youth Development To canalize the youth power of Afghanistan for peace and development To prepare the future leaders for the country’s political, business and civil arena

3 How we reach the goals By empowering youth with education, skills development and employment opportunities By facilitation of effective participation of Afghan youth both men and women in socio-economic processes

6 Youth Mobilisation The ACTED mobilisation team has gone to communities and familiarized with the situation It calls for a general meeting of the youth of the community (of age 15 – 25) Discuss the ideas of youth development Identify natural leader among the youth and form a Core group with a leader called Chief promoter

7 Youth Clubs Chief promoter and Core group members are given orientation about youth council The chief promoter and his team of core group members visit all the house holds and canvas for membership Youth Club in their village. ACTED and Core group decides a date for foundation meeting of interested youth The Youth club members assemble on the day of election and elect 2 representatives for them for youth Council

8 Youth Council A date for representative general assembly at district level is decided in consultation with representatives of youth clubs On the day of representative general assembly, youth will decide on membership fee, constitution and election date. (Model By law is provided by ACTED) Wide publicity is given to election and individual representatives of Youth Clubs are notified.

9 Election ACTED facilitates election On the election day the youth club representatives are assembled They were asked to select one person who is present in the place to be the election officer. (Some one will suggest and another one or two will second) Election officer (EO) will call for nominations for the contesting in Youth Executive Council EO will conduct the election by ballet vote or by rise of hand as desired by youths EO will count the votes and announce the results Elected executive council will elect the office bears – Chair, Vice chair, Secretary, Treasurer

12 Why Volunteerism For social inclusion of youth in decision making process of community To understand the value of selfless work to gain confidence of community To prepare them for public life for nation building To inculcate the spirit of team work

13 Works under youth Volunteerism Cleaning of Mosque and surroundings Roads flattening or correction Canalising water to drinking water tank Cleaning of Drinking water points and Kandas Correction of broken taps Planting of trees on hill slops Up keep of grave yards Cleaning of roads in the village Bazaar

15 What is it? The parliament formed in the schools by the elected members of all the classes above 8th Standard. Salient points Formed by their own wish With the co-operation of school management Conduct weekly and monthly meeting

16 How is it established ? Nomination Campaign Election Formation of parliament Parliament will have an elected speaker Cabinet of ministers headed by Prime Minister is formed and is responsible to the Parliament Other youth Ministers are Education minister, Finance minister, Cultural affairs minister, Sport Minister, Parliamentary affairs minister, Health minister etc.,

17 How does it function? Each Minister has his own list of responsibilities as per the decision of parliament Parliaments meets once in every week after school hours with permission of head of school All minister will read the work done in that month and challenges/problem in the monthly meeting. They record the minutes and prepare letter regarding their problems and sent it to concerned persons in government

18 How does youth benefit? It gives voice to the youth to express their views on issues overlooked by parents and teachers. They will understand the value to democracy and how it works Creates self discipline Attunes their orational skills Reduces drop out

20 Soft Skills development Purpose: To make youth employable Works undertaken –English language skills –Literacy and numeracy –Basic computer operating skills –Management skill development

21 Hard Skills development Purpose: To productively engage the youth and create economic opportunity Works undertaken Vocational training in rented or own constructed building with hired teachers Apprenticeship under skilled workers

22 Important points of Hard Skill development Selection of candidates is made by youth council The selected candidates are certified and approved by the CDCs and district governor Agreement enter into between student and ACTED with parents as witness Accommodation, food and transport are provided Once in a month 2 days sent to home At the end given management training and tool kits to start their own business
