2 Nation vs. Country In order for us to understand more about nationalism we must first explore the difference between the terms “nation” and “country”. In order for us to understand more about nationalism we must first explore the difference between the terms “nation” and “country”. A country is a place with distinct physical territories and government. Another name for country is “Nation-state”. A country is a place with distinct physical territories and government. It is important to understand that nations may exist with-out distinct physical territories and government. Eg. Flames nation ( collection of people sharing the same ideas towards their hockey team.) Many first nations people in Canada are united because they share similar life styles, however various aboriginal nations exists in Canada because of varying differences based on traditional territories and customs. The isolation of peoples allow them to create their own customs and traditions with out influences from those that they are separated from. E.g. The bond may be created through a common resources such as oil or the spectacular scenery of the Rocky Mountains. Spirituality is something that may give a person peace of mind. It may be a certain place, yoga, or mediation. The people who share these types of spiritual experiences may be part of nation. 11 What is a Civic Nation? A civic nation is made of people who share certain political beliefs. When people share these political beliefs things such as language, race, colour and gender do not matter. We are united as a nation in Canada because we share political ideas such as democracy and free speech, not because we share a religion or language. 12 What is Ethnic Nationalism? Ethnic nationalism is based on a group of people who share ethnicity, culture and language. Ukrainian-Canadians share a common ancestry that links them together.
