The Lord’s Prayer 2 ‘Our Father in Heaven’
2
Prayer Jesus said, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’” (Isaiah 56v7) (NIV) We should put PRAYER at the centre of all we do as a church Prayer: ‘The habit of being in God’s presence’.

Matthew 6v9-13 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name,
Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory for ever. Amen. (NIV)

‘Our Father in heaven,’ Other Religions do not call God ‘Father’:
Islam: God is ‘Lord’, but never ‘Father’ OT/Judaism: God is only ‘like a father’. Jesus called God, “My Father,” “My Father in heaven” Jesus is uniquely the Son of God by ‘nature’ We are God’s children by ‘adoption’. As Christians, WE can call God, “Our Father”. See John 1v10-12.

‘Hallowed be Your name’
First we pray that God should be glorified We should be ‘God-centred’ not ‘me-centred’. This prayer ‘sums up’ the rest of the Lord’s Prayer We are praying for 3 specific outworkings: God to be glorified/hallowed in ‘me’: The one praying. God to be honoured in ‘us’: The Church together. God to be honoured in the World around us.

Summary In this first part of the Lord’s Prayer:
We are celebrating God as ‘our Father’: And coming to Him in prayer as His children. We are seeking first that God should be glorified. In ‘me’, in us the Church, and in the world around us.

HOMEWORK! Continue to PRAY the LORD’S PRAYER ONCE EVERY DAY in your prayers in the coming week. Thank God that He is your Father, thru’ faith in Jesus. Ask the Lord, if there are things in your life that DO NOT glorify Him: Prayer about these, and seek His help to be different.
