5 Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake.

7 Did you hear about Tangshan Earthquake? When did it happen? The Tangshan Earthquake was a natural disaster that occurred on July 28, 1976. It is believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20 th century by death toll.

8 The number of deaths was around 240,000 to 255,000. A further 164,000 people were recorded as being severely injured.

11 Can you imagine what the city of San Francisco was like after the earthquake? It happened on April 18, 1906. The earthquake and resulting fire are remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States.
