1. College-Ready Vs. Remediation: What Does It Mean for You? College Success Team

What Does It Mean to be College-Ready?  College-ready means you are eligible to take courses in Math and/or English that count towards your Bachelor’s Degree or towards transferring from a Community College  We will discuss what this means at the Cal State System and the Community College System today

3. How do I know if I’m considered College Ready?  Students who have ACT, SAT, or CAASPP exam scores can use those to determine placement in English and math Classes.  If a student isn’t considered ‘College Ready’ from one of these tests, he or she will take placement exams for the CSU and CCC systems.  These exams represent your last chance to be considered ‘College Ready.’ – You will take the placement exams in February, March or April of 2016.

Worst Case Scenario: I’m considered ‘Not College-Ready’ – What does that mean?  You will have to enroll in “remedial” courses, either over the summer as part of the CSU Early Start Program and/or you will need enroll and pass “remedial courses” during your first year of college.  Let’s take a look at a few of examples

6. You can place up to 4 remedial courses below College Level Math

Summer EARLY START $182 per course (Free with Fee Waiver) Fall 1 st Semester Remediation Course or College Ready Spring 2 nd Semester College Ready If you don’t pass the EPT/ELM exam, you’ll spend your summer in school! If you do not pass remedial classes at CSU’s by the end of your 1st year, you may be DISENROLLED from the university! This course sequence isn’t the same at every CSU Some Things to Note:

Bottom line – Remediation has the potential to push back your graduation date 1.It takes time and money to complete remedial requirements. 2.Students who complete Math and English requirements prior to arriving at a CSU are 33% more likely to graduate than those who do not. BUT: Remediation isn’t the end of the world. Plenty of students complete their requirements and graduate from college – it takes perseverance and focus to make it happen

So How can you avoid remediation? 1 st Opportunity – EAP – Embedded in Junior Year CAASSP Exam2 nd Opportunity – SAT and ACT Scores – Taken Junior and/or Senior Year3 rd Opportunity – CSU/CCC Placement Exams – Taken Spring of your Senior Year4 th Opportunity – Early Start Program – CSU’s ONLY! Taken Summer after Senior Year Many of you have your 3 rd Opportunity Coming Up!!!

10. 1 st Opportunity: EAP English Exam  If you score “Ready” in EAP English: – Placed in CSU/CCC College-Level Courses – Exempt from taking EPT/CCC Placement Exams  If you score “Conditional” in EAP English: – And enrolled in ERWC, AP English Language, AP English Literature you need to pass both semesters with a “C” in order to be exempt from the English placement exam. – If both semesters are passed you will be placed in a College-level English course.  If you score “Not Yet Ready” in EAP English: – You must take EPT/CCC Placement Test – If you do not pass the EPT, you must enroll in “CSU Early Start”(Summer)

11. 1 st Opportunity: EAP Math Exam  If you score “Ready” in EAP Math: – Placed in CSU/CCC College-Level courses – Exempt from taking ELM/CCC Placement Exams  If you score “Conditional” in EAP Math: – Need to pass both semesters of an approved Math class with a “C” your Senior year. If so, you are exempt from the ELM/CCC placement exam and you will be placed in college-level math. Trigonometry & Math Analysis Statistics Pre-Calculus AP Calculus, Calculus BC, AP Physics, or AP Stats  If you score “Not Yet Ready” in EAP Math: – Take ELM/CCC Placement Test – If you fail ELM, you must enroll in CSU Early Start (Summer)

12. 2 nd Opportunity: Using SAT/ACT Sub-Scores

13. 3 rd Opportunity: CSU/CCC Placement Tests (EPT/ELM/Accuplacer)  CSU Placement Tests: – EPT: CSU English Placement Test – ELM: Entry Level Math Test – If you are not exempt from taking the EPT/ELM exam, you MUST take it! It’s a condition of your enrollment. – Register for Test Date in March or February: https://ept- elm.ets.org/CSU/https://ept- elm.ets.org/CSU/ $18 each  CCC Placement Test – ACCUPLACER: placement exam at CCC’s – Take at your local CCC for FREE!

14. 4 th Opportunity: CSU Early Start  Students who do not demonstrate readiness for College- Level Math and/or English after taking the EPT and/or ELM exam will have to complete CSU Early Start during the summer before starting at a CSU.  REQUIRED: summer before fall entering college.  $182 per course – Does not cover books – Financial aid available

Securing On-Campus Housing  Housing application fees and deposits are payments made by a student to their college or university in order to secure campus housing  This fee is usually non-refundable  Depending on the institution and the student’s financial situation, these fees may be waived or deferred until financial aid disbursement  Housing is often distributed on a basis first come first served regardless of application due date, so it is important to complete housing applications and submit payment as soon as possible
