International Airport Site Evaluation St. George, Utah TYREL EDWARDS - JOSH GATHRO - MATTHEW HALES - PLOY SAMRANJIT 25 APRIL 2016 CEE 5190 – GIS FOR CIVIL ENGINEERS

Overview OBJECTIVE CRITERIA ANALYSIS RESULTS

Criteria Slope Population Density Accessibility Available Parcel Size Land Cover Geologic Hazards Flood Potential

Analysis Gather Washington County Boundary Gather Existing Parcel Shapefile ◦ Clip to Washington County

Analysis: Slope Download Digital Elevation Model (DEM) ◦ Project Raster to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 12N ◦ Use “Slope” Tool to create Slope Raster ◦ Clip Raster to Washington County Eliminate Parcels with Average Slope greater than 5%

Analysis: Population Density Download 2010 Demographic Data for Washington County ◦ Calculate Population Density for Demographic Blocks Eliminate Parcels within “Urban” Area Classification ◦ Bureau of Census – “Urban” Areas >1000 people/mi 2 Eliminate Parcels within Subdivisions ◦ Use query tool to remove parcels <1500 m 2

Analysis: Accessibility Download Municipal Boundary data for Washington County Select Parcels within 10 miles of St. George or Washington City Download Road Shapefile ◦ Clip to Washington County ◦ Remove Small and Undeveloped Roads Visual Inspection of Proximity to Major Roads ◦ Used later as additional Accessibility Criteria

Analysis: Parcel Size Combine Adjacent Parcels ◦ Use “Integrate” tool to close small gaps between adjacent parcels ◦ “Dissolve” adjacent parcel boundaries to create “Super Parcels” Eliminate Small “Super Parcels” ◦ Query to remove parcels less than 1,000 acres ◦ 5 remaining candidates!

Analysis: Land Cover Download Shapefile of Waterbodies ◦ Eliminate parcels over waterbodies Download National Land Cover Data (NLCD) Raster ◦ Clip to extent of remaining 5 parcels Eliminate Parcels with Large Percentage “Developed” Classification ◦ 3 remaining candidates!

Analysis: Geologic Hazards Download Quaternary Fault shapefile ◦ No parcels intersecting fault lines Download Engineering Geology shapefile ◦ Expansive soils intersecting two of remaining parcels

Analysis: Flood Potential Download Flood Areas shapefile ◦ Eliminate parcels within “Zone A” and “Zone AE” category flood hazards

Results Three remaining parcels: Existing Airport Warner Valley Hurricane

Results Comparison of three remaining parcels: SizeLandcoverRoad AccessSoilsFloodingDistanceNoiseTotal E XISTING A IRPORT 11121118 W ARNER V ALLEY 21222111 H URRICANE 321113314

Results: Existing Airport Biggest parcel size Easy road access and close to populated area Decent soil quality Low noise pollution The map was created by USU - CEE 5190 students for Semester Project. Sources are originated from Utah AGRC, gis.utah.gov., and USGS National Elevation Dataset, mrlc.gov.

Results: Warner Valley Second largest parcel Requires additional access Decent soil quality Close to populated area Low noise pollution The map was created by USU - CEE 5190 students for Semester Project. Sources are originated from Utah AGRC, gis.utah.gov., and USGS National Elevation Dataset, mrlc.gov.

Results: Hurricane Smallest parcel Easy road access Very good soil Further to the populated area Higher noise pollution The map was created by USU - CEE 5190 students for Semester Project. Sources are originated from Utah AGRC, gis.utah.gov., and USGS National Elevation Dataset, mrlc.gov.

Recommendation Expansion of the current St. George Regional Airport ◦Meets criteria ◦Lower cost ◦Easier to develop

Discussion Endangered species data Additional criteria More acreage desirable

Conclusion The map was created by USU - CEE 5190 students for Semester Project. Sources are originated from Utah AGRC, gis.utah.gov., and USGS National Elevation Dataset, mrlc.gov. https://www.utahsbdc.org/center/st-george
