1485 1509 Timeline for the key conspiracies and rebellions against Henry VII

In 1486, a ten year old boy (called Lambert Simnel) was been persuaded to pose as the Earl of Warwick. Supported by the Irish, Margaret of Burgundy (the sister of Richard II and Edward IV) and the Earl of Lincoln he was crowned Edward VI in Dublin. Did Henry: a)Send assassins to kill Lambert Simnel. b)Fight Simnel’s armies at the Battle of Stoke and kill all of the survivors (including Simnel). c)Fight Simnel’s army and kill most of their leaders but pardon Simnel and put him to work in the royal kitchens. Perkin Warbeck was being passed off as Richard, Duke of York and was being supported in his claim to throne by France, Burgundy, the Irish and by Yorkists in England. He was a thorn in Henry’s side between 1491 and 1491. Did Henry: a)Send assassins to kill Warbeck. b)Bribe his supporters to give him up. c)Capture him then keep him as his prisoner.

The last member of the de la Pole family (the Earl of Suffolk) who had been previously loyal to Henry, suddenly fled to Europe in a bid to gain the throne. Did Henry: a)Imprison all of the remaining family members as a form of blackmail. b)Use a stroke of luck, the arrival due to a storm of the Archduke of Burgundy, who was sheltering the Earl, to persuade them to give up de la Pole. c)Send assassins to kill him. As a response to Henry’s taxes for a war against the French in 1489, a rebellion began in Yorkshire. Did Henry? a)Send a huge force in order to scare off the rebels. b)Follow a scorched earth policy and destroy the North England. c)Take on board the opposition to the tax, grant a pardon and collect no more tax.

Some Cornishmen rebelled in 1497 at taxes being raised to fight a war against Scotland and Perkin Warbeck. Marching towards London they picked up more and more support Did Henry: a)Send troops quickly to fight the rebels. b)Negotiate an end to the taxes. c)Capture the leaders, execute them and then fine all those involved to prevent further unrest.

After the Earl of Warwick’s execution in 1499, de la Pole was the next in line on the Yorkist side. He fled abroad and tried to get support for his claim. When their ship took shelter in England, the Archduke of Burgundy was persuaded to give up the Earl of Suffolk providing he was looked after. Henry kept to his word (but he was executed in 1513 by Henry VIII). Yorkshire rebellionNorthern nobles and some Yorkists. They rebelled over taxes raised for a war to help Brittany against France. They killed the Earl of Northumberland. Henry sent a large army to deal with the rebels and put the Earl of Surrey (who had no lands in the north so was neutral) in charge. He collected no more tax. Cornish RebellionCornish and West Country nobles and tradesmen. Marched to London in protest to taxes being raised for a war against Scotland. Henry brutally defeated the rebel army at Blackheath and executed the leaders. Anybody else who supported it was fined. He decided that wars were too costly after this.
