You are to develop a magnetically levitated vehicle that will travel along a sixteen -foot track in the shortest time possible. A small electric motor and propeller will generate propulsion. Students will be allowed to draw electricity from the track’s side rails that will be energized with a variable power supply. No weigh restrictions apply You can use the classroom supplied cardboard or materials brought from home The length of the vehicle base = 3 ½”in. minimum -to- 10”in. maximum The width should be no less than 2 ½” Inches (Which is the width of the track) You may use 4 magnets for levitation You must design a “wire lock” for your brush contacts as part of your system Brush contacts must not sustain or hold the vehicle on top of the track Read all the information in this packet Research the internet…what have other people designed? Sketch several design before you begin (you will need to turn this in anyway!) Weight is your enemy! Hot glue is heavier than white glue DIRECTIONS: REDRAW YOUR BRAINSTORM SKETCH’S TO HELP YOU DECIDE ON YOUR FINAL DESIGN!!! TOPFRONTRT. VIEW

DESIGN TECH: MAG LEV TRAINS DRAWING & SPECIFICATION WORK SHEET NAME: CLASS: QTY.ITEM NAME “DRAWING AREA” DIRECTIONS: On your own, determine what type of materials you will use to draw your vehicle. Begin your design using the following information: Width of the vehicle body = 2 ½” inches, Length of vehicle =4” inches minimum to 10” inches maximum, Height = 8” maximum, & Each magnet = 1” L X ¾” W each Make sure you show your Dimensions (L x W) & Label all of your components. (Draw the top view) Name of MagLev racer: __________________________________________________________ Type of vehicle: ___________________ A-Frame, Twin Frame, Platform, or Solid Body Overall Length of your racer from front to back: ________________ cm _______________ mm Overall width of your racer from left to right: ___________________ cm _______________ mm Overall height of your racer from top to bottom: _________________ cm ________________ mm Weight of your racer: _______________________ grams Center of gravity measurement from tip of nose: _________________ cm ________________ mm Center of profile measurement from tip of nose: _________________ cm __________________ mm

Mag Lev Vehicle Summary Report 1.Did your car make it down the track? (Yes/No) What was it’s best time? 2.What are some of the advantages of Maglev transportation? 3.What are some possible disadvantages of Maglev transportation? 4.What is the main reason that it would be expensive to replace the present steel-wheel-on-rail train systems with Maglev systems. 5.How did you propel your vehicle across the flat track? 6.How was magnetism used to propel the vehicle across the track? 7.How could you increase the magnetic force that levitates your vehicle so that the vehicle could carry a 100 gram weight? 8.If you were to complete this activity again, how would you improve your vehicle? 9.Electric motors can run on what type of power? 10.Define the words: Brushes, Commutator, Rotor, Attraction, Drag, Magnets, Electromagnets, Polarity, Mass Transit, Magnetic Poles, Repulsion, Protoype Vehicle Name: Preliminary Time Trial:Time:Your Best Time Overall:Time: -vs-Time: D= R x T (Show The Work for your best time) Time: -vs- Name:Hour: Directions: Answer the following questions on a sheet of line paper! When you are finished staple your questions to this worksheet. Answer the questions using the blue technology textbook and your Maglev design brief!!!
