Understanding how humans and the environment interact.

Human and Physical Features HumanPhysical  Human features are created by people.  Physical features are formed by nature. Every location has features that make it different from all other locations. It’s important to understand the difference between human and physical characteristics

Human VS Physical Human or Nature?

Human-Environment Interaction ModificationAdaptation  When people change the way the environment looks or acts, it’s called modification  What are some ways in which we MODIFY our environment?  When the environment changes the way that people look or act, it’s called adaptation.  What are some ways we adapt to our surroundings? Humans and their surroundings interact, or affect each other.

Adaptation  People can adapt to the environment by:  Wearing clothing that is best suited to the climate  Adjust their dietary habits to reflect the crops or livestock native to an area  Taming indigenous animals to navigate terrain or perform manual labor  Using local raw materials (any material or substance used to make something helpful)

Adaptation

 People also have to adapt to natural disasters or processes that frequent an area.

Human Modifications People modify the environment by building irrigation ditches, roads, and dams.

Human Modification People have also changed the face of the Earth by building skyscrapers and monuments.

Human Modification  Humans also may modify the environment to try to slow down or prevent natural disasters

Consequences PositiveNegative  Growth of more food than is necessary to support our population  Extensive transportation system that allows us to move freely about the country  Fewer floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes that kill people  Greater comfort and ease of meeting basic needs  Pollution  Overcrowding  Erosion and Flooding in some areas  Loss of natural environments  Extinction of some animals
