Newton’s laws of motion, Momentum, & Projectile Motion (pages 41- 57) In 1686 Sir Isaac Newton published his book Principia which had 3 laws that relate forces to the motion of objects. His 3 laws are known as Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion.
2
Newton’s 1 st Law of Motion “ An object at rest stays at rest or an object that is moving at a velocity or speed in a straight line keeps moving at that velocity or speed unless another force acts on it. “ ….sometimes called the law of inertia
3
What is Inertia? Inertia= the tendency of all objects to resist any change in motion.
4
Newton’s 2 nd Law of Motion “ The amount of force needed to make an object changes its speed depends on the mass of the object and the acceleration required. “ Formula Force= mass X acceleration a= 9.8 m/s/s F = m X a
5
Newton’s 2 nd Law of Motion An object’s acceleration decreases as its mass increases. (move something slowly, feels heavier) An objects acceleration increases as its force on it increases. (push something harder it will move)
6
Newton’s 3 rd Law of Motion “ For every action (or force), there is an equal and opposite action ( or force). “ - Forces act in pairs (action, reaction pairs)
