5 Baseball Americans made up the game of baseball in the 1800s. Many Americans enjoy watching or playing baseball in their spare time. It takes a lot of practice to play baseball with skill.

6 Basketball When basketball was invented in 1891, players threw soccer balls into peach baskets. Basketball has changed a lot since then, but the goal is still the same: To score points, players must get a ball through a high basket rim, or hoop.

7 Football Football is a popular sport that uses an oval- shaped ball. Two opposing teams try to pass, kick, or carry the ball across each other’s goal line to score points. Football players use moves such as blocking and tackling to prevent their opponents from advancing the ball.

8 Golf Golf is a popular outdoor sport played all over the world. Here, fans watch a golfer at a professional golf tournament.

9 In golf, players use specially designed clubs to hit a small, hard ball over a large, grass-covered golf course. The goal of golf is to hit the ball around the course using as few swings as possible. In golf, unlike most sports, the player with the lowest score wins! Golf is usually played by individuals, rather than by teams. Players often compete against each other in small groups or at large tournaments. WHAT IS GOLF ?

10 Tiger Woods American golfer Tiger Woods is one of the world’sbest professional golfers. Here he is shown playing in the British Open, one of the four most important golf tournaments in professional golf.

11 BalancingBalancing on the Beam A gymnast performs on the balance beam, a narrow wooden beam that is raised off the floor.

12 Ice Skating Ice hockey

13 Skateboarding Skateboarding was originally called sidewalk surfing, but soon developed its own style. Some skateboarders like to go fast and try difficult moves. Wearing a helmet and pads is a good idea!

14 David Beckham English soccer star David Beckham became one of the sport’s most popular players in the late 1990s. Soccer Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world. Outside the United States, the sport is often known as football. In Spanish-speaking countries, where the game is especially popular, it is called fútbol.

15 Tennis Match A tennis match can be played by two players or four players. A doubles tennis match, shown here, has four players. One pair of partners plays the other pair.

16 Venus Williams Venus Williams and her sister, Serena, started playing tennis as young girls. They went on to become famous tennis players and one of the most successful tennis families in the sport’s history.

17 Martial Arts Martial arts developed in East Asia. They are a way of fighting without weapons. Today people practice martial arts for physical fitness, self-defense, and competition.

18 Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do Karate T'ai Chi Judo Sumo Wrestling China Korea Japan

19 T'ai Chi This group is practicing the Chinese art of t'ai chi. They perform their movements slowly and carefully. They practice t'ai chi for health and relaxation.

20 Practicing Tae Kwon Do These boys practice tae kwon do, a method of fighting known as a martial art. Like other martial arts, tae kwon do also teaches students courtesy, honesty, and self-control. Corbis/Jim Sugar

21 Karate Kicks and punches are important in karate, a martial art of Japan. You can see some karate moves in this video.

22 Judo Judo involves grabbing and throwing your opponent. This martial art developed in Japan.

23 Sumo Wrestling The martial art of sumo wrestling is a popular sport in Japan. Sumo wrestlers weigh a lot. They are highly trained.
